Barmouth News - 28th June, 2009

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

Harrison Wilde

It is sadly reported that Harrison Wilde died on 15th June and was cremated after a ceremony in Bangor at which about fifty local people were in attendance. During the time that Harrison lived in Barmouth he made a tremendous contribution to local society. His biggest commitment was to the refurbishment and extension of the Dragon theatre. He along with a small , exceptionally hard working group, created a facility of which the community will always be proud. He was also a staunch supporter of the Literary and Debating Society of which he was a long time member holding the most senior positions. He will be remembered as a genial, generous and highly capable member of the community. Many of the organisations with which he had contact were represented at the funeral. Donations in lieu of flowers were requested for the Air Ambulance appeal.

Not Wrestling

Due to complications experienced by the promoters in arranging insurance the advertised Wrestling bout at the Dragon Theatre will not now be able to proceed. It is expected that a further event will be booked when cover has been obtained.

FunDay

Thankfully the sun shone for the Healthy Living Fun Day held on the Ysgol y Traeth field last Saturday. This was the most successful event of its kind with a greatly increased number of exhibitors. Both local and national organisations were present, each keen to show what they had to offer and also collecting for their funds to enable their work to go forward. The organisers Communities First wish everyone to know that they are very grateful for the time and effort put into the development of the event and for the help that they received from a wide range of local people.

Open event

The Open University Drop In to be held on Wednesday 8th July at the Communities First office is generating lots of interest. Anyone curious about courses, many of which will be free, can call in any time between 12noon and 3-30pm and talk with Gayle from the O.U. and to Nerys from Genesis. It looks as if there will be enough interested people to set up a support group for students and Communities First will be able to provide facilities and equipment for this.

Home help

The Wales Co-operative Centre and the Consumer Credit Counselling Service are launching a new housing debt helpline to support people vulnerable to losing their homes. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, the ‘Housing Debt Helpline Wales’ offers support to home owners and those in rented property who are finding it difficult to meet their mortgage or rental payments. The website is now live and can be viewed at http://www.housing-debt-helpline-wales.org

L.E.T.S. get together

The next meeting for the creation of the Local Exchange Trading Scheme will be held on July 10th at 10am at the Communities First offices in Station Road. The system allows members to trade skills on an equal basis measured in one hour units. If your skill is baby sitting, decorating, form filling or anything else you can trade your skills with those of any other member. If you are confused, go along to the meeting where the members will be happy to explain how you could benefit.
