Open university Drop-in

There is quite a lot of interest at the moment from people in Barmouth wanting to find out more about Open university courses. Communities First have arranged to the O.U. and with Gensis to host a drop in day at the office in Station road on July Wednesday July 8th from 12 noon till 3-30pm. Gayle Hudson and Nerys Owen will be on hand to talk about how you can work entirely from Barmouth and still get good quality support and help with finances so that you can work towards a qualification at your own pace and in your own time. It is intended that a local support group will also be developed so that students can get together if they want to. You may be able to study at no cost too. The Management Committee met on Monday 15th June and began on a sombre note as Chairman Melville Penzer paid tribute to Harrison Wilde, the President, who had died that morning. Harrison’s work and tenacity over many years has left the town with a wonderful building, a legacy which is much appreciated. Members stood in silent tribute. The Chairman then conducted the meeting starting by welcoming Benjy Williams who will represent the Ardudwy Youth Theatre. Manager Allison Williams reported on the past months activities and on those in the pipeline. She advised that the lift had been repaired and that a web site was being designed. The treasurer Geraldine Vincent gave the financial report and expressed concern about the utility bills. Advice has been received that users of the building for commercial purposes should carry their own public liability insurance. The Chairman closed the meeting after reporting that Amy Siviter, who had previously performed in the theatre with the local arts group is progressing well at theatre school.

U3A June Meeting

Unfortunately, due mainly to the beautiful weather, a fairly small gathering of the U3A met in the Arts Room of the Dragon Theatre at 2.00pm, on Tuesday 17th. June, to hear a fascinating presentation by Adrian Hicks, on his overland journey from the depths of Meirionnydd to a music festival in Timbuktu. Evelyn Richards, the new chairperson of Barmouth U3A opened the meeting by paying tribute to Harrison Wilde, who unfortunately passed away recently, and who had always given generously of his services to the community of Barmouth. His open, warm personality could always be depended on to enliven any gathering. He will be sorely missed. Adrian initially gave us a short history of the discovery of fabled Timbuktu by Europeans, and followed this with a stunning and entertaining collection of photographs and recollections of his journey…a feast for armchair travellers, and a whetting of the appetite for others. Tony Iles will give a presentation at next month’s meeting, on the Wrecks of Cardigan Bay.
