Barmouth News - 7th February, 2009

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

Lit and Deb meeting

On the 5th February at the Lit & Deb evening, the Chairman Mr. Ron Cole introduced PC. Mike Humphreys Community Beat Manager based in Barmouth. A most interesting and informative talk followed interspersed by members’ questions. The various jobs of Police Officers today was discussed and the importance of community support. Although they have access to the latest technology for communication and information access– e.g. Blackberry phones-, it is nevertheless essential for the public to be visually aware and pass on information to the Police. Therefore, they are involved in many local aspects in the area they cover from Bontddu to Llanfair. The job is of course made far more difficult by the large influx of summer visitors, but the crime rates are relatively low, and in the vote of thanks Sheila Higdon, Hon. Sec. said how much they appreciated his visit and the work the local force did. The next meeting will be held on the 12th Feb. when Mr. Steffan ab Owain will talk about ‘Archaeological Curiosities’

Hugh’s Views

Increasingly popular are the occasional Monday morning sessions at which members of the community are able to go to the Arts room of the Dragon Theatre to see, on the big screen, a selection of the pictures that are held in the community archive on the internet. The count is around 2000 images now and includes a large collection of excerpts from the Barmouth Advertiser. Interest in the site comes from all over the world and the site is regularly used as an educational resource. The session on Monday February 23rd will begin at 10am with a break for coffee at 11am and finish at noon. Everyone is welcome to participate and contribute their stories and recollections.

B.R.A.

The AGM of the residents association was held on Monday last. The officers have agreed to continue in post for another year and were elected unanimously. A review of the year shows that the association have been active in wide and varied projects. It is felt that this is a forum at which anyone can bring up any topic of relevance to the wider community. There are Councillors, Communities First officer and representatives from various authorities on hand so that issues can be signposted on to those who can most effectively deal with them. If you have an issue or concern you are welcome to go to the meetings in the Min y Mor on the first Monday of each month and have your say.
