Barmouth News - 15th August, 2009

Digital

Stage one of the digital switchover took place in Barmouth on Wednesday 19th August. At this point BBC2 analogue was turned off. If you can no longer receive this channel it may indicate that you are not ready to receive digital broadcasts. If you do not have a compatible television and have not obtained a set top box or satellite t.v. system you will find that from 16th September you will not receive broadcasts. Communities First have some leaflets that will help you understand what you need to do, literature is also being sent to every household by the organisers of the changeover.

Hearing help

On Friday 21st August there will be an open house session at the Community Health Council office in Arran House, Arran road Dolgellau. You will be able to find out about caring for and getting used to your hearing aid, local services that can be of help and about other equipment that could improve your quality of life. The doors are to be open from 9-30am till 1-30pm. RNID can give more help and advice, their number is 01978 318900.

Craft Fair

On Sunday 30th August, on Bank holiday weekend there will be a producers fair in the Parlwrs of the Dragon Theatre. You will be able to view and purchase locally made items. The fair will open at 10am and run till 4pm

Passout

Dexi Britland passed out as a Welsh Guard at a ceremony on Friday 7th August. The inspection of the troops was carried out by William Hague M.P. The thoughts and prayers of his family and friends go with him and his fellow solders in these difficult times.

Catrin O’Neil concert

On Thursday 20th August Catrin O’Neil who is a Welsh Irish folk singer and songwriter will be in concert with Mike Lease and Chris Knowles. They will perform in the intimate atmosphere of the Arts Room at the Dragon Theatre from 8pm. The bar will also be open. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Family Affair

The sporting fun day arranged by Barmouth football clubs for Sunday 30th August is drawing a lot of interest. If you want to enter a team for the competition please call Craig Papyrnik on 07737993880 soon. Further details of the events for the day can be seen on the posters around town.

Carnival on the square

As part of the fund raising for this years November firework festival Delyth Morris is helping to arrange a Carnival on Talbot Square on 12th September. There will also be a Tombola . The Samba Band will be drumming up support and any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated by Delyth .

Dragon theatre plays host

Two very entertaining but different plays are running at the Dragon Theatre this month. Bermo Arts’ Vicar of Dibley is playing to packed houses on Wednesday evenings while the visiting Criccieth Paradisii Theatre company’s Barefoot in the Park fills the Monday evening slot with a lively, witty, clever adaptation of the American comedy film. Both are excellent entertainment value at surprisingly low cost. Tickets can be bought at the door but since they are popular, don’t be late. Snap

This years Arts Festival will feature an exhibition of photographic works by invited local photo artists. Viewing of the works will take place during the week of the festival in the Arts Room during intermissions. It promises to be an interesting and varied collection. Tickets for events during the Festival are already on sale by phone and from 1st September there will be a box office facility in the theatre foyer. Orange leaflets can be found around town detailing this years exciting programme.
