Barmouth News - 18th July, 2005

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

Latest success

Congratulations to Anna Harvey who gained a B.A. honours degree in Welsh and education at Aberystwyth university last Tuesday. Anna, who grew up in Barmouth, attended Ysgol y Traeth, Ysgol y Gader and Coleg Meirion - Dwyfor before going on to study at Aberystwyth. She was a resident at Pantycelyn and a member of the choir that appeared recently in the new Millennium Centre for the Urdd in Cardiff which was broadcast on S4C. Anna was also part of the choir that sang with Bryn Terfel last year in St David’s Hall. It too was televised. Anna is now living with her mum in Dyffryn Ardudwy and is planning on taking a teachers training course after a well earned rest. This is the latest in a number of achievements for Anna, who has, in the past, received a Child of Achievement award: had a poem win a place in a pony magazine: won a painting competition run by the Red Cross for to raise funds for a hospital in Romania, where the painting is displayed. She has many riding awards and was crowned carnival queen in 1994 in Barmouth. Good luck for the future Anna you have worked hard and done well.

Thank you to every one who made the barbecue a success, gave their time and donated the food. Also thank you to all the helpers of G.Ban,

Correction: Last week it was said that Stan Shaw had been runner up in the Ron Barnard Cup. It was in fact Stan Ward

Summer Music

On Wednesday July 27th The Groves Piano Trio will give an evening of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky at Theatr Ardudwy in Harlech at 7-30pm.

Murder at the Dragon

Following a very successful run in Harlech, the Ardudwy Community Theatre Group have been persuaded to bring their excellent production of Agatha Christie’s "A Murder is Announced" down to Barmouth. The stage of the Dragon Theatre has been transformed into the front room of a Victorian house in the village of Chipping Cleghorn and the play opens on the morning that a mysterious and ominous advertisement appears in the local paper. Can Miss Marple deduce whodunnit? Can the audience? It’s a murder-mystery to keep everyone guessing through many twists and turns. Showing Thursday and Friday (21st and 22nd) at 7.30pm, tickets available on the door, or can be reserved on 01341 281 697.

Communities First

The July meeting of the Partnership was held in Parlwr Mawr on Tuesday 7th.

The large gathering was advised of developments on several projects being pursued in the Town, no only by the partnership but also by other agencies. It is hoped that a sand filled synthetic surfaced mini pitch with wooden rebound walls will be ready for use by the end of the year. This facility will be available for the community to use for a range of sports. This is in addition to the redevelopment of the football pitch at Wern Mynach where drainage improvements are being carried out to combat the surface compaction that has developed over the years. That project should see the pitch being playable early next season.

Work by the Environmental Conservation group is moving steadily forward on Wern Mynach while the felling of trees at Aberamffra will commence in the autumn.

The planned Car Boot Sale that is being organised by the Barmouth Residents Association was mentioned, there are several extra attractions to be added to the original sale idea including games for the children, raffles, refreshments and other items yet to be confirmed.

The questionnaire relating to the creation of a credit union in Barmouth has been created and will be used at various locations around town. A booklet giving useful information for the over 50 age group is being compiled. It will take the form of a ring binder so that new or updated information can be added or substituted with ease.

The CBM Mike Humphreys advised the group that a CRASBO had been granted in the case of a young offender who had been dealt with by the courts though the exclusion provision was not accepted. He mentioned that improvements to the memory on certain of the CCTV units had been increased and that picture quality had been refined. The issue of frequency of rubbish bin emptying was considered; it appears that the problem arose because a new officer of the council did not realise the volume of waste generated in the town during busy periods. County councillor Trevor Roberts is dealing with the matter.

Following the meeting the partners and guests enjoyed a superb barbeque in the garden of the community centre. The food was prepared and cooked by Nina Huntley and her helpers who produced an excellent selection of tasty and filling meats and salads. They created a really enjoyable event for a summer evening allowing partners and guests to relax and discuss past projects and future schemes in a very convivial atmosphere.

Barmouth on TV

On Wednesday August 10th, Nickelodeon, a sky and cable channel will be broadcasting live from Barmouth beach, near the donkey rides, from 10am till 12noon.

Pay to park

The car park behind the leisure centre, the former bus stop, has for many years provided free parking for those “In the know”. That is soon to change. A meter has been ordered for the area and once installed it will become a pay and display area. The money will go to the leisure centre so that at least the town will benefit. There is some confusion as it had been said that users of the centre could park for free while using the facility but there is no indication that such a system could actually be operated since, in similar parks no ticket means a standard fine. Perhaps the council will offer guidance when the meter comes into operation.

A Victorian Seaside Melodrama

Mr Shell’s Seaside Spells will convince anyone that the old time seaside show for children is alive and well. Produced by Magic Carpet Theatre this show for 5 to 11 years old children will include all the Ooh’s and Aah’s you could desire. There will be a magic workshop at 10-30am costing £2 and a show at 2-30pm costing £5 and £3 at the Dragon theatre; you may pre-book tickets by calling 281697 or pay on arrival The date for this extravaganza is Wednesday 27th July.
