A blessed day was had by all

On Thursday 26th August a Summer Fete was held at Cors y Gedol Hall Dyffryn Ardudwy in aid of three charities: MacMillan Cancer Relief, the Sudan Appeal and the Uganda Appeal A grand sum of £3,063 was raised and divided equally. Thanks are due to all those who worked so hard in preparation for the event, and to all those who worked on the stalls and other attractions on the day and of course to all the people who came to enjoy themselves.

A Grand raffle was held, with the first prize of a bumper Food Hamper being won by Mrs Ruth Harvey - Saunders a visitor from Shrewsbury. A popular attraction was the Balloon race, the 500 Helium filled balloons were released during the early afternoon to the great delight of the children present The most distant recorded balloon so far has been found in Hertfordshire, the eventual successful "Finder" will be rewarded with a £10 prize; the owner of the winning balloon will receive a prize of £4O. Closing date 24th September.

Special thanks to Mr Eddie Bailey and his family for allowing this very successful event to be held in the beautiful grounds of Cors Y Gedol Hall. Many of those attending were curious about this ancient and interesting property which provided such a perfect setting. Visitors were heard to comment that the atmosphere was that of a traditional, "Old fashioned village fete", exactly what the organizers were aiming to achieve.

Broaden your horizons

The next Educational Courses Taster / Sign Up event in Barmouth will take place at Parlwr Mawr in the Dragon Theatre between 11am and 7pm on Thursday 16th September. The event is being organised by Cyfle Bermo, an umbrella organisation comprising Communities First Barmouth, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Coleg Harlech / WEA, University of Wales (Aberystwyth) and other agencies. A previous event arranged by Careers Wales in January 2004 attracted over a hundred people. The organisers hope that the present event with considerably more courses being on offer will provide a similar boost to the town.

Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Coleg Harlech I Workers Education Association and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, who all run courses in the town will have friendly staff available throughout the day to explain what their courses involve, what can be gained from doing them and what financial support is available to allow people to attend the courses for a low fee or in many cases for free. Mantell Gwynedd will advise on voluntary opportunities, which may suit people with time on their hands.

There will be help available from Working Links for people on benefits and wanting to get back into work whilst people with disabilities will be able to speak with Brocer Cymru about what help and opportunities will be available to them.

Kids Clubs Wales will also be there with advice and help for young parents who want to find ways of getting back into work, and there will be information available from the NCMA (National Childminders Association).

Careers Wales will act as hosts, welcoming everyone to the event, finding out what their needs are and introducing them to the best people to help them further. They will also be offering guidance services to anyone who is unsure as to their next career move. For further information, please contact Danny Jones on 01341 280979.
