These are pictures of the Crosville staff I grew to know while I was a boy, growing up in Barmouth. In those days this team would drive double-decker buses through the narrow streets with amazing skill. The tourists were always in awe when the double decker made the turn down to the Harlech castle parking lot and squeezed past the traffic in the narrow roads e.g., leading to Llanaber just outside Barmouth and around Llanbedr. I have "zoomed-in" on the picture to make the faces more legible. Scroll down the page to see the larger format pictures.
This picture was taken on a Sunday morning in 1948, in front of the Crosville garage, a year before I was born. The bus was KA 139, the best in the depot at the time. The Crosville garage was at the bottom of Marine Road, close to what is now "Ysgol y Traeth". The garage was painted green as I recall. There was always a smell of diesel there and from time to time, if a bus was leaving the garage for the depot next to the railway crossing, I could get a ride into town, riding on the platform at the back of the double decker.
The Pughs
My father, Emlyn Pugh, is pictured here in the top row, furthest to the right. He later became Superintendant for the Barmouth depot and later, the Superintendant for the Denbigh and Deganwy depots. Ifan Rowland Edwards was the Depot Superintendant at the time this photograph was taken. He is pictured here in the bottom row, second from the left. My grandfather, Griffith Pugh (Taidy), is pictured in the middle of the bottom row, his hat cocked to one side. Taidy would later drive the "Toastrack" (an open-air single decker bus) up and down the promenade. He seemed to know everyone in town and frequently gave me a free ride on the "Toastrack" if there was room.
