 Barmouth Railway 'Until the 18th century, the main route from Dolgellau to Harlech (the ancient county town) or 'highway', which was scarcely more than a rough track, left the Mawddach valley near Bontddu and proceeded over 'Y Llawllech', past the mansion of Corsygedol to Talybont where refreshments were available at Llanddwywe Inn. Barmouth was reached by decending a track through the old part of the town (Hen Bermo) on the rock. The existing road from Dolgellau, relatively recently widened, was blasted and carved out of the rock no earlier than 1798.' A good variety of motive power could always be found at Barmouth over the years and, hauling interesting coaching stock, 2600 class 'Aberdare' No2679 prepares to leave the station (c1932). These Dean-built engines were predominantly used on coal trains, and some were fitted with large ROD tenders. No2679 was withdrawn in February 1946. My parents occupied one of the flats shown in the background at the time I was born in Barmouth. The 'Mona' cafe could be found a ground level.
