American Medical
Informatics Association Internet Working Group
The Internet Working Group (IWG) was launched November 8th, 1994 at AMIA's
annual SCAMC meeting. The IWG's mission is to promote the development of
Internet-based tools for the medical community and provide educational
opportunities for IWG members. The IWG conducts scholarly sessions and lectures
in conjunction with AMIA's meetings twice a year. The sessions showcase members'
pioneering efforts to offer multimedia and interactive access to medical
resources. The Group sponsors lively discussions on its Internet electronic
mailing list and interests individuals involved in the dissemination of
electronic medical information.
The Combined Health Information
Database
CHID is a database produced by the health-related agencies of the U.S.
Federal Government. It provides titles, abstracts, and availability information
for health information and health education resources.
The National Institutes of
Health
Services, current health issues, link to other medically related resources
at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
The world's largest biomedical library. A service of the NIH. Every
significant program of the Library is represented from medical history to
biotechnology.
Centers for Disease Control
The CDC is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The CDC is an agency of the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with the mission of promoting
the health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury,
and disability. Their WWW site has information about all projects and health
topics of interest to the CDC.
Health Web
The HealthWeb project was conceived in 1994 with the goal of providing
cooperation among the health sciences librarians of the Committee for
Institutional Cooperation (CIC) schools to develop an interface which will
provide organized access to evaluated, non-commercial, health-related,
Internet-accessible resources. The interface will integrate educational
information so the user has a one-stop entry point to learns skills and use
material relevant to their discipline. The CIC is the academic consortium
of twelve major teaching and research universities (the Big Ten with the
University of Chicago).
Medical Search Engines
The National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE is an extensive database of abstracts from 3,800 plus biomedical journals published in the U.S. and 70 foreign countries. MEDLINE has been in operation since 1971 and currently consists of more than 9 millions records with approximately 33,000 new citations being added each month.
A good search engine for finding medical resources on the Internet. The site includes link stations for medical and scientific journals, medical schools, and companies. There's also a database of drugs, columns on the latest medical news, links to software, newsgroups, forums, weekly alerts from the FDA, CDC, NIH, and more.
Mednets provides an extensive catalog of medical databases available on the Web. At MedNets you can use a pull-down menu to access search engines that cover particular medical subjects.
This subject directory includes links to more than 26,800 resources on the Internet. It covers categories like alternative medicine, diseases and conditions, health Institutes and organizations, pharmaceuticals and drugs, and medical products and services.
This site makes it possible to do full text searches on nearly 100,000 Web pages from thousands of SELECTED medical sites. It also gives you quick access to InfoSeek, HotBot, WebCrawler, AltaVista, and PubMed MEDLINE.
NSABP's
Medical Search Engines
This Web site provides direct access to 28 medical search engines and journals including MEDLINE, National Library of Medicine, PharmInfoNet, and The Doctor's Guide. The site is maintained at the University of Pittsburgh.
The government site is a good source of general information on medical subjects such as AIDS, cancer, Medicare, tobacco, and government health news.

Guide The university of Wisconsin maintains an electronic version
of the Antimicrobial Use Guidelines published by the Department of Pharmacy.
