Snape wants to create a potion that will dampen Harry's charisma spell, but Harry would rather learn how to use the spell correctly. Harry tells Hermione and Ron about his trip to a new bookstore as they are going Christmas shopping to the same store.

Harry sneaks out of the bookstore alone, and encounters an intruder in his house in Hogsmeade. Harry returns to the bookstore and spends the afternoon with Snape and Volkova. They leave at nightfall, and are almost captured by Death Eaters. Volkova uses an unusual method to keep from losing Harry. Harry learns a couple of useful spells from her, and gets clues about her as a person.

Ron is upset that Harry is developing a friendship with Snape, and he takes his anger out on Hermione. They reconcile after he apologizes. Hermione, Ron, Harry, and Lupin go to Hogsmeade. Ron and Hermione return. Snape is searching for Harry in the late evening and can't find him. Snape and Ron go to Hogsmeade to find Harry, and run into Volkova at the bookstore. Snape and Volkova go into Harry's house to find him.

Realizing that it was not the real Remus Lupin who attacked Harry, Snape wants Harry to try to use his clairvoyance to find Lupin. After Harry has had a day or two to recover, and having had no luck with Lupin's things, Snape, Harry, McGonagall, and Dumbledore go to the house in Hogsmeade to find leads on Lupin's whereabouts. Harry has a confrontation with the ghost of his attacker, but he finds no leads on where Lupin might be. The Daily Prophet publishes several stories about Harry's attack, and about his attacker's funeral and the fallout from his death. Harry gets a visit from someone from his recent past, and sees them in a whole new light.
