Richard Podolsky Biography

Richard Podolsky is a Ph.D. ecologist with a strong background in computer imaging, software development, technical writing and editing, and environmental consulting.

He is presently Senior Environmental Scientist at a large consulting firm. He has been a freelance computer imaging consultant to corporate, government and non-profit clients. Additionally, he is the founder and president of Avian Systems a software company that creates scientific imaging software packages targeted at scientifice industries. Podolsky is the principal designer and developer of all of Avian’s software titles including FULLPIXELSEARCH, GAIA, FIRETOWER, and DIVERSIDAD. He is a certified software developer for Microsoft, Apple Computer, and Silicon Graphics and he has in depth experience with Visual C++, Symantec Think C and C++ and other software development tools.

Richard Podolsky has an outstanding track record in helping clients reduce potentially adverse environmental impacts of new development and achieve regulatory compliance; excellent strategic skills in competing for bids, expediting permits and avoiding costly environmental litigation; expertise researching and successfully applying cost-effective, state-of-the-art environmental techniques, materials and software to new development and mitigation projects; strong team leader and communicator with substantial staff and fiscal management skills; experienced at proactively addressing the development concerns of environmental organizations and community groups, and troubleshooting with governmental officials to achieve regulatory compliance. Podolsky has over 25 publications and book chapters dealing with biodiversity, restoration ecology, GIS and remote sensing. He has completed over 30 consulting contracts for academic, government, industry and non profit clients and taught 12 full semester courses at several universities and colleges. Podolsky has years of experience in Latin America and on numerous Atlantic and Pacific islands. He has led expeditions to Antarctica, Galapagos, and other destinations. Podolsky enjoys working with land developers and construction companies on projects with extreme environmental sensitivity.

Podolsky's expertise includes: minimizing light and sound pollution, ornithology, wildlife and endangered species restoration, remote sensing, GIS, landscape ecology, biodiversity assessment/protection and reducing power line, utility pole, and wind turbine mortality. Major clients have included, the United Nations Development Program, Electric Power Research Institute, Center for Ecosystem Studies, Allegheny Power Company, Southern California Edison, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Department of Navy, Wal-Mart, Exxon Valdez Restoration Team and others.
