November Reunion 2007

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The reunion pictures were sent in by Nancy Derr Polin, Bessa Whitmore, and mainly by Polly Kimball Jones—thank you!

I've divided them into two groups:

ALBUM ONE

which shows our tour of Angier School and the Union Church, and a second album:

ALBUM TWO

which contains all the rest.

Because it is a bit laborious captioning all the photos, I have named all the Waban tour participants in Album One, photos 12 and 13. Other persons are named as they appear in the other photos, to the extent they're known to me. I've left the photos in a large format in order to facilitate identifying persons—you'll have to scroll back and forth a bit.

THE EVENTS

On the weekend of November 9 -11, 2007, the Fifties Waban crowd returned to Newton for a reunion of the Newton High School Class of 1957, and for a special gathering in Waban.

At Friday noon we met at the Angier School and met in the old assembly hall, now a library, where (thanks to Glenn Rogers and Mike Maloney) we enjoyed milk and graham crackers (only two per student), and a greeting from Pam Appleton, the current Angier principal, and Lauren Comando, teacher and current school historian. Pam and Lauren, the most gracious hosts one could possibly imagine, then led us on a tour of the school, which most of us hadn't seen in over fifty years.

Next we visited the Union Church, where many of us attended Sunday School and sang in the children's choir. Thanks very much to Drexey Wile Smith for organizing this visit, and the tour of Angier.

We walked through town to the Windsor Club, where Chris Pitts, from the Waban Improvement Society, led us on a tour of the place, with a special emphasis on the newly renovated bowling alleys, and of course the subterranean crypt where Mrs. Ferguson lies buried. Chris and Roger Kellaway gave us a number on piano and sax upstairs in the main hall.

At the Waban Public Library we enjoyed a discussion sponsored by Loren Paul of the Improvement Society, and Mr George Nugent, an Angier pupil in the 1930's and NHS grad in the Class of 1946. A number of other older residents joined us in reminiscing about past decades in Waban's history.

Matt and Polly Kimball Jones hosted a reception at their clubhouse in Westborough, followed by dinner was prepared by Karen Rak and transported all the way from her kitchen in Belfast, Maine.

On Saturday afternoon we gathered in Concord for a reception at the home of Nancy Derr Polin's daughter, Tessa. Here we caught up with some classmates whom we missed on Friday, including Bessa Whitmore, Craig and Penny Warren Springer, and Tom Gillespie.

Saturday evening was dedicated to the NHS '57 reunion at the Marriott Hotel, towering over the site of the Totem Pole Ballroom at Norumbega, where our senior prom took place fifty years ago. A few hundred classmates socialized, enjoyed music by Roger Kellaway, and danced to 50's tunes on the dance floor. The event was followed by a brunch in the hotel on Sunday morning.

If you feel inspired to leave a comment on the reunion weekend or about any of the photos, please
use the Guestbook function on the Contents page, or go here directly. (Be forewarned that it will only accept a few lines of print for each message.)

Drexey created a questionnaire which many Wabanites filled out, these are right here.

We've also received messages from some folks who were unable to attend, and these are posted right here.

Best wishes to everyone,

                                 — Jim Mitchell
