From uo.com

The Character Window : All the information about your characteras well as the most of the game options, is accesible from your Character window. To open the character window, just double click your character.

Character Window

The Character Window is also called your Paperdoll. All the information about your character, as well as most of the game options, is accessible from your Character Window. To open the Character Window, double-click on your character. The Character Window, as well as all information windows in the game, can be closed by right-clicking it. All such windows in the game can be moved by clicking and dragging them to another location on your screen. Many can be minimized by clicking on the minus sign (-) on the window.

In the 3D client, your character in the Character Window is animated to reflect your movements within the game. You can use the arrows provided to rotate your character and you can select the Freeze option to disable the Character Window animation.

Name

Your Character Window displays your character’s full name, including profession, and any titles you may have. Your name will also reflect your reputation (the reputation system is explained further along in the playguide).
Clothing/Armor/Weapons The Character Window shows a close-up view of your character, including the clothing and armor you’re currently wearing, or any weapons or tools you’re currently wielding. Hover the cursor over any tool, weapon, or other item to identify it.

To remove an item on your person in the Character Window, click and drag it to your Backpack or to the ground. To equip an item, drag it onto your paperdoll. It will automatically be placed in the correct slot for that item.

Some items, such as bracelets, necklaces, and rings, may be difficult to see on your paperdoll. For ease of wearing and removing these items, they will be visible in the small equipment slots located to the left of your paperdoll.

Note: Certain items and actions may require that you have one or both hands empty. Check your paperdoll if you have difficulty equipping or using an item.

Backpack

Everything you’re carrying that you’re not wearing or wielding is in your Backpack. Double-click on the Backpack to the right of your character in the Character Window to open your Backpack and display its contents. After you open the backpack, you can add and remove items by dragging them to and from your Backpack. If you have many items, it may prove difficult to select the item you wish. The best way is to move the cursor until the item you want is highlighted. In the 3D client, you can resize your backpack window by clicking and dragging the blue gem in the lower right corner of the window.

Your backpack may also be accessed by clicking the Inventory button on your character window, or by using the Alt-I macro shortcut.

Special Move Book - Immediately to the right of your Backpack is your Special Move book. Double-click the book to open it. This book allows you to perform several weapon-specific Special Moves - every weapon has two Special Moves associated with it. The two Special Move Icons will change depending on what weapon you are currently wielding. To execute a special move, double-click it. The Special Move will be attempted when you next attack your opponent. You can drag the two Special Move Icons onto your desktop for easy access to your Special Moves.

Party - The Party scroll is the rightmost scroll to the lower left of your paperdoll. It opens the party system manifest. You may use this manifest to invite others into your party, to communicate with your party, disband from your party, and control whether party members may loot your corpse. For additional information on the party system, click here.

Profile - The Profile scroll is the leftmost scroll to the lower left of your paperdoll. You may fill this page with any information about your character that you wish to be public knowledge. To do so, click on the profile screen and start typing. Other players viewing your character window may open the profile and read it at any time.

Note: Profane and abusive profiles are a violation of the Ultima Online Terms of Service and may result in action against your account.

Character Window Buttons

There are a number of commonly used buttons located to the right of your paperdoll in your character window.

Help - The Help button opens the help system menu. Should you find yourself in a situation where you have questions about the game, about the rules of Ultima Online, or are having problems of any sort, you may use this menu to find answers to your questions or request assistance from game staff. Options - The Options button opens an extensive menu of options to customize your game screens, sounds, and other functions. For a full description of the options menu, click here.

Logout - This button will disconnect you from the game and return you to the Main menu. Your in-game character will remain in the game for five minutes after you log out. Your character will fight back if attacked, but only melee. This function exists so unscrupulous characters will not be able to unfairly escape dangerous situations simply by breaking their internet connection.

If you log out by using your camping skill, or log out while at an inn or in your house, your character will disappear from Britannia immediately and will not be subject to the five minute log-out timer.

Journal - The Journal button opens a scroll-shaped window that contains a written record of your most recent conversations and actions during the current play session. You can resize the Journal window by clicking on the tab at the bottom, then adjusting the size of the white outline. Clicking on the padlock icon will lock the visible text in place until you click on the padlock again.

Inventory - The Inventory button opens your backpack. You may resize your backpack window by clicking and dragging the blue gem in the lower right corner of the window. Typing ALT-I will also open your backpack.

Skills - The Skills button opens a window listing all your skills and their ratings. Skills are arranged by category: Miscellaneous (craft skills), Combat Ratings, Actions, and Lore and Knowledge. Click on a category to display your ability with all the skills it contains. If you wish to group together the skills you use most often, click on New Group at the bottom of the skills scroll. You may then drag any skills you wish into the new group.

Once you establish the new group, you can rename it by highlighting the words New Group and typing over them. You may make multiple new groups if you wish. You may delete any of the four default groups by completely emptying it of all the skills it originally contained.

Many of the skills listed have a blue jewel next to their listing. The jewel indicates that in order for the skill to be used, it must first be evoked from this scroll. To evoke a skill, open the scroll and click on the blue gem.

Guild - The Guild button opens up the Guild interface. If you're already in a guild, this interface will allow you to access various guild related functions. If you're not in a guild, you can create one here. For additional information on the guild system, click here. Peace/War - The Peace/War button will toggle your character from Peace mode to War mode and vice versa. Additional details on fighting and war mode may be found in the Combat section of this guide.

Status - The Status button opens a window displaying your character's vital statistics. Hover your mouse cursor over each section of the status window for a brief description.

Map - This button opens an overhead image or your immediate area. Your location within the map is noted by a single white dot. You may toggle between small and large map windows by clicking the Map button or press ALT + R. Note that the Map button option is only available from the Character Window in the 3D client. In the Renaissance client you may use the ALT-R option to view the map.

Moving Your Character
From uo.com

The first thing you'll want to do is learn how to move around. Practice in the area near where you were placed in the game, as you will be inside town and safe from any harm.
Walking Around

In Ultima Online, you move your character by right-clicking. Place your cursor over a point on in the gameplay window and right-click. You will turn to face and take a step towards the cursor.
Continual Movement

Holding down the right mouse button and left-clicking once will put you into continual motion, in the direction your mouse cursor is pointing. Or you can place your cursor some distance away in the direction you want to go and right-click and hold the right button down. You will keep moving in the direction of the cursor until you either release the button or run into something. The farther you move your mouse from your character while moving, the faster they will move.
Opening Doors

Before you may move through a doorway or gate, the door or gate must be open. To open a door or gate, double-click on it. If the door is locked, you will receive a message stating so.
Running

You can run during continual movement. The further the cursor is from your character, the faster your character will move. To move at a slow stroll, keep the cursor an inch or so away from your character. To sprint, move the cursor out to the edge of your window.
Note: You may set your character to always run by using the Options menu available from your character window. Keep in mind, however, that running depletes your stamina faster than walking.
Long Distance Travel

The world of Britannia is quite vast, and composed of multiple facets or land areas. To ease travel over long distances, adventurers may opt to use spells, runes, or moongates

To use a moongate, walk through the glowing blue portal.

Macro Options

Macros are an important feature of the game that allow you to fully customize your interface. Macros let you string together complex command combinations to fit any circumstance that you think may arise. You can have as many Macros as you like (at least until you run out of keyboard commands), and a Macro can contain as many actions as you wish (of course, the more actions a Macro has, the less likely it is to be useful on a regular basis during play).

You can scroll through your current list of Macros using the previous and next buttons on the Macro screen.

To enter a new Macro:

Click on the add button for an empty command field. Enter the key you want to use to trigger the new Macro (numbers, letters and punctuation may be used). You may also toggle the Shift, Alt or Ctrl keys on or off. For example, if you want to enter four Macros for use in battle, they can be triggered by B, Shift-B, Alt-B and Ctrl-B. (Note that Macro commands using only letters, or Shift + letters, may be unintentionally triggered during normal text exchanges).

Once you’ve selected the trigger, enter the commands that will make up the Macro itself in the field below the command field. Click on the field to see a list of available options. Each time you set an option, a new command field will open up for any further commands you wish to apply to your Macro. When your Macro is done, just stop adding commands and click Okay or Apply to save it.

You can delete an existing Macro by clicking the delete button, then clicking Okay or Apply.

The following commands are available in the Macro window:

Say - Open a text window where you can enter a line of dialog that your character will speak when the Macro is used.

Emote - As Say, but may be a different text color than normal speech (see "Change Emote Color" above). Also, any Emote text will be placed between two asterisks, for example *grin* or *Broods darkly*. The traditional function of emote text is to convey actions, attitudes, or emotions rather than simple speech.

Whisper - As Say, but whispered text (e.g., "Psst, wanna buy a chicken?") can only be "heard" by characters immediately adjacent to you.

Yell - As Say, but yelled text (e.g., "HELP!") can be "heard" by any character up to a screen and a half away.

Walk - Opens a menu of compass directions from which you choose one. Using this menu causes your character to face and take a step in the selected direction.

War/Peace - Toggles you between War mode and Peace mode.

Paste - Pastes text from your Windows clipboard into a book or speech. Text length is limited. Speech can be only a few words, while books can receive a few sentences.

It does not apply to skills initiated by using a specific item or taking a certain action.

Last Skill - Attempts to again Use the last skill you Used.

Cast Spell - Presents you with a list of all the spells in the game, from which you must select the specific spell you want to cast. It's up to you to ensure the spell you select is, in fact, one that you actually know how to cast.

Helpful hints
From uo.com

Don't be afraid to ask other players for help if you're confused. But do remember to keep in mind rules of common etiquette. Always remember that other players are people just like you.

If you know a trade skill (such as fishing, or tailoring), with a very small investment in raw materials, you may start making items and selling them for profit quite quickly.

The color of each character's name gives you important information about them:

Blue: This player or NPC is a good citizen of Britannia

Red: This player or NPC has committed murder.

Orange: This player is an enemy guild or faction member

Grey: This player has been flagged as a criminal for a recent action

Green: This player is an ally guild mate or faction member

Shopkeepers inventory may change with supply and demand. If you can't find the item you're looking for in a city, you may wish to visit player-run vendors, commonly found in and around houses in the wilderness.

A great way to meet other players is by participating in player-run events and quests

The Ultima Online skill system allows you to customize your character any way you want. If you decide you want to change the focus of your character and are no longer interested in a particular skill, just flag that skill to decay by toggling the 'down' arrow next to it in your skill list. As you learn other skills, the decaying skill will lose points over time.

Use your bank vault. It's free after all! Store valuables in your bank vault before heading off into the wilderness. If you run into trouble, you'll know that your valuable items are safe in town.

Top Ten Ways to Make Gold

Money makes the world go round – whether this world, or Britannia. Use this list of tips and suggestions whenever you need to line your pockets.

1. Scavenge around town banks. People often drop lesser magical weapons, wands, and other sellable items on the ground. However, it’s always wise to ask out loud before grabbing items.

2. Mining. Spend some of your gold on a few mining picks and start gathering ore from the nearest mountain range. Once you reach a skill of 50, smelt the ore to sell to other players or vendors.

3. Buy a cotton or wool at the tailor shop and make cloth to sell. Once you’ve gathered wool or cotton, double-click a spinning wheel to target the wool and create balls of yarn. Balls of yarn can be double-clicked and targeted on a loom to create cloth.

4. Politely ask another character for some help. Do not specifically ask for gold, and do NOT spam the question repeatedly. Many times a helpful person will assist you with resources (be it gold, ingots, or even weapons and armor) in addition to their tutelage.

5. If you are a fighter, purchase a weapon and kill undead at the Newbie Dungeon. You can go to the Newbie Dungeon using the Travel Stone

6. Kill cows, and use a bladed weapon on the corpse. This will produce a pile of hides. You can then use scissors on the hides to make them lighter. Tailors (players, not shopkeepers) will be interested in buying your hides for a fair price.

7. Collect kindlings and sell it to campers

8. Join events

9. Grab an axe, head to the forest, and lumberjack. Use a carpentry tool to make the logs you lumber into the lighter boards. Sell your lumber to players and NPC shopkeepers.

10. Collect reagents from vendors, on the ground, and from monsters. You can often find other players interested in buying reagents, especially in bulk.
