The first thing you'll want to do is learn how to move around. Practice in the area near where you were placed in the game, as you will be inside town and safe from any harm.
Walking Around
In Ultima Online, you move your character by right-clicking. Place your cursor over a point on in the gameplay window and right-click. You will turn to face and take a step towards the cursor.
Continual Movement
Holding down the right mouse button and left-clicking once will put you into continual motion, in the direction your mouse cursor is pointing. Or you can place your cursor some distance away in the direction you want to go and right-click and hold the right button down. You will keep moving in the direction of the cursor until you either release the button or run into something. The farther you move your mouse from your character while moving, the faster they will move.
Opening Doors
Before you may move through a doorway or gate, the door or gate must be open. To open a door or gate, double-click on it. If the door is locked, you will receive a message stating so.
Running
You can run during continual movement. The further the cursor is from your character, the faster your character will move. To move at a slow stroll, keep the cursor an inch or so away from your character. To sprint, move the cursor out to the edge of your window.
Note: You may set your character to always run by using the Options menu available from your character window. Keep in mind, however, that running depletes your stamina faster than walking.
Long Distance Travel
The world of Britannia is quite vast, and composed of multiple facets or land areas. To ease travel over long distances, adventurers may opt to use spells, runes, or moongates
To use a moongate, walk through the glowing blue portal.

Macro Options
Macros are an important feature of the game that allow you to fully customize your interface. Macros let you string together complex command combinations to fit any circumstance that you think may arise. You can have as many Macros as you like (at least until you run out of keyboard commands), and a Macro can contain as many actions as you wish (of course, the more actions a Macro has, the less likely it is to be useful on a regular basis during play).
You can scroll through your current list of Macros using the previous and next buttons on the Macro screen.
To enter a new Macro:
Click on the add button for an empty command field. Enter the key you want to use to trigger the new Macro (numbers, letters and punctuation may be used). You may also toggle the Shift, Alt or Ctrl keys on or off. For example, if you want to enter four Macros for use in battle, they can be triggered by B, Shift-B, Alt-B and Ctrl-B. (Note that Macro commands using only letters, or Shift + letters, may be unintentionally triggered during normal text exchanges).
Once you’ve selected the trigger, enter the commands that will make up the Macro itself in the field below the command field. Click on the field to see a list of available options. Each time you set an option, a new command field will open up for any further commands you wish to apply to your Macro. When your Macro is done, just stop adding commands and click Okay or Apply to save it.
You can delete an existing Macro by clicking the delete button, then clicking Okay or Apply.
The following commands are available in the Macro window:
Say - Open a text window where you can enter a line of dialog that your character will speak when the Macro is used.
Emote - As Say, but may be a different text color than normal speech (see "Change Emote Color" above). Also, any Emote text will be placed between two asterisks, for example *grin* or *Broods darkly*. The traditional function of emote text is to convey actions, attitudes, or emotions rather than simple speech.
Whisper - As Say, but whispered text (e.g., "Psst, wanna buy a chicken?") can only be "heard" by characters immediately adjacent to you.
Yell - As Say, but yelled text (e.g., "HELP!") can be "heard" by any character up to a screen and a half away.
Walk - Opens a menu of compass directions from which you choose one. Using this menu causes your character to face and take a step in the selected direction.
War/Peace - Toggles you between War mode and Peace mode.

It does not apply to skills initiated by using a specific item or taking a certain action.
Last Skill - Attempts to again Use the last skill you Used.

Helpful hints
From uo.com
Don't be afraid to ask other players for help if you're confused. But do remember to keep in mind rules of common etiquette. Always remember that other players are people just like you.
If you know a trade skill (such as fishing, or tailoring), with a very small investment in raw materials, you may start making items and selling them for profit quite quickly.
The color of each character's name gives you important information about them:
Blue: This player or NPC is a good citizen of Britannia
Red: This player or NPC has committed murder.
Orange: This player is an enemy guild or faction member
Grey: This player has been flagged as a criminal for a recent action
Green: This player is an ally guild mate or faction member
Shopkeepers inventory may change with supply and demand. If you can't find the item you're looking for in a city, you may wish to visit player-run vendors, commonly found in and around houses in the wilderness.
A great way to meet other players is by participating in player-run events and quests
The Ultima Online skill system allows you to customize your character any way you want. If you decide you want to change the focus of your character and are no longer interested in a particular skill, just flag that skill to decay by toggling the 'down' arrow next to it in your skill list. As you learn other skills, the decaying skill will lose points over time.
Use your bank vault. It's free after all! Store valuables in your bank vault before heading off into the wilderness. If you run into trouble, you'll know that your valuable items are safe in town.
Top Ten Ways to Make Gold
Money makes the world go round – whether this world, or Britannia. Use this list of tips and suggestions whenever you need to line your pockets.
1. Scavenge around town banks. People often drop lesser magical weapons, wands, and other sellable items on the ground. However, it’s always wise to ask out loud before grabbing items.
2. Mining. Spend some of your gold on a few mining picks and start gathering ore from the nearest mountain range. Once you reach a skill of 50, smelt the ore to sell to other players or vendors.
3. Buy a cotton or wool at the tailor shop and make cloth to sell. Once you’ve gathered wool or cotton, double-click a spinning wheel to target the wool and create balls of yarn. Balls of yarn can be double-clicked and targeted on a loom to create cloth.
4. Politely ask another character for some help. Do not specifically ask for gold, and do NOT spam the question repeatedly. Many times a helpful person will assist you with resources (be it gold, ingots, or even weapons and armor) in addition to their tutelage.
5. If you are a fighter, purchase a weapon and kill undead at the Newbie Dungeon. You can go to the Newbie Dungeon using the Travel Stone
6. Kill cows, and use a bladed weapon on the corpse. This will produce a pile of hides. You can then use scissors on the hides to make them lighter. Tailors (players, not shopkeepers) will be interested in buying your hides for a fair price.
7. Collect kindlings and sell it to campers
8. Join events
9. Grab an axe, head to the forest, and lumberjack. Use a carpentry tool to make the logs you lumber into the lighter boards. Sell your lumber to players and NPC shopkeepers.
10. Collect reagents from vendors, on the ground, and from monsters. You can often find other players interested in buying reagents, especially in bulk.
