Wallace Blue Book Listing # 3

Chronology of Listings 1979 to 1991

Hal Meadows, LTC, Retired - Assigned as DO Jun 78 - Jun 79

Lt. Dave Ferguson, Col. retired, was the admin officer there in 1979 along with Ltd Walt Jones, Det 6 commander, retired as BG in Wash DC, and Roy Davis, Col retired in Montgomery Ala was was the ACW commander while I was there as DO June 78 to June 79. I don't recognize much of the area, but my wife says that's cause I was under water so much of the time. SMS Terry Behm, and I went through SCUBA training together, became Dive Masters, and spent most of many days, and a lot of nights under water all around Wallace. We still made Outstanding on the PACAF ORI so maybe CMS BUCH BRENNAN's kicking butt lasted for another two years! Of course we had a bunch of can do, and get it done NCOS, and a great team as well.

Your picture of the station from the air is the best I've ever seen. Dave Ferguson told me about your site, and the people I've mentioned above by email this morning. Would love to see a listing of info on all of the people who were ever there. It has to have been one of the best and most colorful assignments in the USAF. I was originally assigned as commander but offered DO when Col. Roy Davis extended, and I took DO in a heartbeat. During a Filipino civilian employee strike during my tour I served as fill in "cook" and a"life guard" at the beech and loved doing both. The Filipinos were wonderful! LT Col Elano Fabi and I became great friends and some how I lost contact with him. Hal Meadows, LTC, RETD, 1980 in Colorado Springs. mailto: halmeadows@comcast.net

Rafael A. Villamil 1st LT Air Weapons Controller 1980

Like many of you I was stationed at Wallace air station and had a splended tour of duty. I was just promoted to first lieutenant and was an Air weapons controller at kidskin operations. I met many wonderful people and important people in the local government. It was really a great assignment. I was pastover for promotion to Capt and decided to leave the air force. In 1991 I joined the army reserve and was called into Kuwait and later went to my home in Puerto Rico. There I joined the National Gard, now I'm activated with the 92nd. Separate Infantry Brigade with a rank of SFC soon to be promoted to Master sgt. I was suprised when I found this site it brought alot of memories back. Thanks for this website and you have a lifetime friend. villamilRA@aol.com

Don Mulkey SSGT Tour of duty - Nov 79 - Nov 81 Det 6 1961CG

Worked in the "safe", comm center in the 848th building between the radomes. made SSgt while there, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the people of san fernando and hung out at the local establisments meeting the people and making many friends. Some of the things I vividly remember besides the friends I made there like bong-bong, big freddy and rick in the cash cage at the WASCOM as well as the many "WASCOM hoovers" who always invited me over to meet their families. I was always willing to help those in need.

There was the USS Grayback sub that was diverted to San Fernando due to no room at subic bay. The Sailors took over the WASCOM to blow off six months worth of steam. We did have a couple of small incidents but the Airheads and swabbies got along very well. Before leaving they threw a party on the boat deck. we had so many people on board that they had to blow ballast to keep the thing afloat. There was also a major earthquake off the island of luzon in july that measured almost 7.0 that shook us pretty hard and sent a "BIG" wave crashing against the cliff and took part of the supply area away. Scared the heck out of all of us!

Made many trips to Clark, Angelese City, Baguio/John Hay. Had a wild time with many members of the 848th when we took Sgt Al Rachel, my roommate all over northern luzon to celebrate his marriage to his wife "Rose". We stayed stewed for two days. There are many other great memories, to many to mention. I didn't want to leave, but was assigned to the white house and couldn't get my orders canceled. the best assignment of my career. mailto:dmulkey@hotmail.com

Albert L. Rachel Sgt. Tour of duty - Nov 1979 - Jan 1982

I as assigned to Det-6 and worked in the Base Comm Center. I lived in the Hufana Compond and I have several pictures and fond memories of those days. Thank you for this site - Aim High!! --- Al Rachel, USAF Retired --- mailto:hwyflyer@earthlink.net

Don Dawson MSgt. Chief of Security Police at Wallace 1981-82.

I was there for a little over 14 months, having lived through the typhoon that almost totally destroyed the base. It hit the night prior to the day I was to leave, so I ended up spending a couple of extra months.LtCol John Lee was the Commander for most of the time I was assigned there. I also came back several times with the PACAF IG on MEI inspections of Clark. I'm also in touch with Ken Moon, who was the NCOIC of the Medical Aid Station while I was there. Of all my assignments in my 28 year career in the AF, Wallace is the one I loved and remember the most. This is quite a statement, seeing that I left Wallace to be the Chief of Security Police at Bellows AFS in Hawaii, a military beach resort. I hope more people find this site and write in. SMSgt Don Dawson, USAF Retired. Email: ddawson888@aol.com (Home) ddawson@hawaii.edu (Work)

Richard F. McFadden CMSgt (Ret). Maintenance Supervisor at OL-F, 1961st Comm Group from Dec 82 to Dec 83.

I truly enjoyed working for CMSgt Misamore, as well as his replacement, SMSgt Verl Moore. It was a great assignment. To add to the list of great people Dale mentioned, some other greats were SSgt Ken Mason, SSgt Brent Rose, and Tsgt Bill terry. It was great working with everyone. E-Mail me at rrtmac393@cs.com

Brent Rose, SSGT. OL-F, 1961st Comm Gp from Dec 82 to Dec 83

Good times were always the norm at the WASCOM, especially when Ken Mason was locked in the attic while installing telephone lines. The OL-F had many great "Geko" runs (supply trips) down to Clark, each with it's own story and Tee shirt to commerate the occasion. The best assignment hands down.

Dale Misamore, CMSgt (Ret). I was the Det Chief at OL-F, 1961st Comm Group in '82 - '83

and made frequent TDY visits back to Wallace in '84 thru '88. A truly memorable assignment - the best in my 31 years service. In addition to MSgt Dawson, our Chief of SP (see Blue Book entry above), I had the pleasure of serving with and for some of the finest people of my military career including: my boss, Commander of the 1961st CG, Col. Vincent Majkowski, my friend, CMSgt Paul Melton, 848 AC&W/LGM, WASCOM Managers John Vogel and Bobbie Sims, all the outstanding OL-F troops including Paul Gates, J.R. Williams, Mel Gomez, Thomas Gayagos, et. al. And of course, our Filipino hosts and friends were the greatest - including Maj. Farolan, PAF Commander, and my faithful Chief Telephone Operator Lena Singayan. I would be happy to hear from any of my old friends. E-mail me at dmisamore@home.com.

Earl K. Waller, CMsgt OL-F Chief - from Nov 1983 - 1984

I was stationed at wallace from nov 1983 to nov 1984 as the OL-F chief . My name is Earl K. Waller, CMsgt, 1961-1991 . Lt. Col Keys was the base commander during my tour. He was an excellant Officer and Commander. I have many fond memories of Wallace and the people there. Mail To: JLWEKW@aol.com

James W. Heathcock, MSgt (Ret.) I was stationed at Wallace from March 1983 - April 1984.

Carlton "Chris" Christian MSgt (Ret.) USAF 1st assigned to Wallace Aug 1983 to 1984.

Returned 1986 to 1987. 3rd Tour 1989 to 1991 Worked to in Operations. Spent the last 2 years at Wallace as Supt. Ops Training. Also, twice elected as President, Wallace Top 4 Association, and worked part time as Night Manager at the WASCOM. I am now residing in Panama City, Florida. A home page for all the former Wallace Warriors. This is the greatest thing, and timely too, considering that this year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Mt. Pinatubo episode. I am passing the word to all that I know. debali1@home.com

Dean Wineland, Wallace AS 1983-1984 (Operations), 1986-1989 (Stan-Eval)

COT to Clark (HQ 13th AF) 1989 until 1991 Pinatubo Eruption. I loved it so much I now live in the PI & divide my time between the Bars in Bauang, The Junction & Angeles City. Being single affords me the opportunity to meet many new friends :-) Mailto:DeanWineland@Hotmail.Com

Larry Land 1LT. Weapons Director March 1984-March 1985

Greetings from formerly 1LT. Larry Land. Weapons Director March 1984-March 1985+ Ground Safety + Water Safety + Flight Safety (the helo pad) + Weapons Safety + Mortuary Affairs. Other than that, piece of cake. Wonder where I can get a WASCOM burger and pizza that slides off the plate.

Maria Powell (Schwartz), Red Cross Volunteer, 1984 - 1985 - Medical Aid Station

Thank you very much for creating this website - it brings back fond memories of Wallace. I grew up in the Wallace area as a military brat. San Fernando was home to me although, I studied in Manila and only came home for the summers. During my college freshman year break, I came home and did some volunteer work at the Aid Station as a Red Cross volunteer with Sgt. Dave Cooper and Sgt. Pace. I had enjoyed working with those two, that I stayed home for good. There was also a wonderful medic before Sgt. Pace took over but I forgotten his name. He was a good guy. I also remember then SMSgt Randy ?? I forgotten his last name...sorry, Randy. Randy was an old friend of the family.

I was one of the bridesmaid at their wedding in November 1985 which was held at WASCOM. That was a blast! I guess, I was having too much fun that my folks sent me to the States in '86. I then joined the Air Force Reserves. I'm a little older (and wiser), married with 4 boys and have my home based business www.adminpros.net. I have my picture on my website, if anyone remembers, of course I was a lot younger during my days at Wallace. I really miss Wallace Beach and the surrounding areas and plan to visit Wallace someday soon. I lost touch with a bunch of good people that I met when I was growing up. Although most of them were very protective of me, I still miss them a lot. One of them is Sgt.Alvin Medina (Power Plant), whom I lost touch with, if by chance Alvin that you read this posts - you need to get in touch with me.:-) mailto:mariap1@cox.net

Paul M. West SGT Assigned July 1984 thru August 1985 - Senior Director Technician - Operations

Upon arrival, my commander was LTC. Keys and my Director of Operations (DO) was Major Bill Ridge (both excellent officers!), eventually replaced by LTC Bakoni and Major Rothweiler. "Home base" while assigned was Ellen's Bar (located between the little and big junctions), home of Charlie Crew Strike Force and the Tired Tigers (anyone remember the sign above the door and the all night parties?).

Primarly, I served as a Senior Director Technician in Operations, but also qualified in Weapons, Surveillance, filled in as the NCOIC of Operations Support (for SSgt Jane Bensing), trained both officers (battlestaff positions) and enlisted in all crew positions and became the primary COMSEC Custodian assigned by the DO. In June 1985 while living across the bay at Oceana, I threw a huge birthday party for my girlfriend and the majority of the base attended, including all the drone contractors from Teledyne Ryan/EC Services..

I.would love to hear from anyone remembering! Memories...let's forget about getting hit by a jeepnie on my motorcycle between Miramonte Beach Resort and Wallace gate. I attained Master Scuba Diver certification there due to the program offered by TSgt Tim Aukshun of OL-F and did my best to eliminate the locale lobster population. Oh yes, the 2 cobras (snakes) that got into the air ducts and dropped down into the Comm Center one night...can't remember the airmen's name on duty, but he ran out of the Comm Center screaming like a terrified little girl and fumagation followed to get rid of them. Right about the time of the cobra incident my friend, Sgt Al Kaiminoku killed a sea snake, coiled it up and stuck it in the freezer in his barracks fridge. You guessed it, the First Sergeant did barracks inspections and fell back on his butt screaming when he looked in the freezer...OOOps!

The most eventful memory while assigned was Wallace Wet T Shirt Night at the old WASCOM (a new WASCOM opened near the Operations area of the base in 1985). A notorious working girl name Melba from the Seamens Club stole the show when she walked to the front of the stage and began pointing out her "customers, " stating what she'd done for them, and calling them all by name! Geez, total chaos errupted and did alot of guys start ducking and running for cover!!!

Anyone remember, "WASCOM GOLD" or take trips to fish on the drone recovery boat (1804) with Ray Brooks, Jack Staggs, Dave Emery, Tommy Thompson, Rudy Juvinal, Hank Brown and company? Every time a drone splashed, it was mayhem trying to beat the locals to it in their Banca boats...seems they thought there was more income in snaggin USAF drones and demanding a ransom than in fishing. This was the best assignment I experienced while in the Air Force and the memories of this place could fill volumes. Contact me with any questions or comments at paulsmission@yahoo.com

Donald Harris MSGT. Tour date Oct 1984 - 1986 - OPS

Robert (Bob) C. Egge Jr. SMSgt (Ret)

I spent most of the time TDY at Wallace replacing most of the telephone cable on base; installing new cable for the new Shoppette, new cable for the new Drone Launch Facility, and new cable for the new CE Compound. I was stationed at Clark AB in Det 1 1837 EIS and was TDY to 1961 CG OL-F.

At one point or the other the following individuals were TDY with me at Wallace: Tim Reynolds, Randy Hadley, Mark Maietta, Jim Brister, Rick Stephens, Kyle Jeffers (or Jeffreys), Art Goble, Amado (Pee Wee) Gracia, Jeff Thayer, Roger Underwood, and a couple of others that have slipped my mind. Almost all of us played softball for OL-F, partied in the Junction, ate at the WASCOM every day for lunch, most of us lived at mark Teresa Apts or in the housing division by the Joker (club). We swam at the beach near Mona Lisa, Cabana, Bali Hai; many got diving certified. We totaled a 5-ton tractor (near Bali Hai after driving up from Clark) pulling a 16,000 pound trencher when we plowed in to the rear of a dump truck stopped in the middle of the road at night with no lights on it. All of us made a ton of money TDY. We worked hard and partied hard. It was a good time, great base, great TDY, except for trying to trench in that darn coral. regge@woh.rr.com

Glenn Woolsey, Sgt, OL-F 1961st Comm, Aug 1984 - May 1986

First off - this is an outstanding site in commeration to the best assignment I've ever had. I was radio maintenance guy working in the ole OL-F and arrived during Chief Wallers reign as OL Chief. TSgt Tim Aukshun ran the radio shop and oh boy was he a character. There was many a night the whole crew would wind up in the junction and, well, you know the rest. It didn't help that Tim and I were neighbors and his wife Alice (thankfully) was very understanding of our motorcycle and bar hopping rampages. The whole scuba scene in waters surrounding wallace was outstanding. I'll never forget the first fish I speared was a blowfish and Tim just shook his head thinking; what a rookie! I've got to send in some pictures for the album page (the few I have left thanks to some ex-gf's) that bring back some great memories. Still remember the wet t-shirt contest that Paul West refers to in his post (yes Paul, the lobstering was good too). We (OL-F) sponsored the event and most of the fun came from our recruiting drive to get girls to participate. It wasn't one of those "build it and they will come" kinda things, it took persuasion baby. SSgt Wally Simmons (now Chief Simmons) did a great job emceeing the event.

And the old crew: Chief AlanTokifuji, TSgt Tim "action" Aukshun, SSgt Mike (OP) Anderson, SSgt Wally Simmons, SSgt Vic Hawkins, Sgt Al Terhaar (madman), SSgt John Strezbala (waffelizer), AMN Randy Benefield, A1C Raul Paez, A1C Phil Harris(SMSgt sel), Sgt Bob Brown, SMSgt Anthony Ponte , MSgt "fast" Eddy Powell, Bhang Mercado, and of course base operator #1 Lena. Sorry if I missed some of you. Man those were the days weren't they? Some of us were members of the San Fernando motorcycle club, mainly Brian Lebutt (I think; retired navy guy), Tim Aukshun, and Mike Anderson. we ran in some memorable races near Bagio, hills surrounding San Fernando, and at Clark AB.

I remember sometimes I would pack up the motorcycle on Friday afternoons and rocket on down to Angeles in time for the grand start of the evening happy hours. A lot older and wiser now. I'm currently a SMSgt stationed at Charleston AFB SC and look to retire during Jun 2005. Would love to hear from any of you to share some memories and a few laughs. woolsey@comcast.net

Scott Cherry A1C/SrA 1961CG/OL-F/CommCenter Operator assigned Jun 1986 - Jun 1987.

Man! What a site! To The creator of this site, thanks a million! When I landed at Clark AB and got off of the plane, the first thing that hit me was the HEAT!!!!! Then it was the bus ride to Wallace. I was both sad because it was my first time in a foreign land, but happy because the scenery was AWESOME!!!! Once I arrived at Wallace it took about 20 minutes to know that I was at the right place at the right time!!!

I was immediately ferried to the Wascom by my "sponsors" where they proceeded to get me drunk. I then met sooo many good people, some of which I still keep in contact with today. Let's see, there was My main man, George "Doc" Holiday, with whom I still stay in contact with regularly. Gerald Goldsby, my co-worker and b-ball teammate, DJ Anthony "Tony-D" Daniels, cool Ken Freshnock, Bobby Sims, Bryan Miles, Mike Howard, Jimmy Best, Roger Jewett, Don Reese, my roomies, Bobby Smith and Renaldo Williams (I think), my boss TSGT Willie Fuller, Lacelle Dykes, Sean Jones, Errol Hite, and Some of my Wallace Air Crew basketball teammates, Greg Thatch of Supply, who could jump out of the gym AND hit the tar out of a softball! Jerry Green, Kevin Phillips, Mike White, Charles Ferrell, Kevin Edwards, Kevin "Hoov" Hoover. And let's not forget the ladies. My co-worker, Tammy Stevenson (woo! she was fine back then!), my homegirl from Portsmouth, Va, Debbie Elliott, Kim Hunter, Gina Dillard, fine old Mary Jane Brisbois of the SPs! (she was gorgeous!). I remember hangin out at the junction, the Joker, skinny-dipping at the Driftwood beach at midnight with one of the Air Force ladies (oh yeah..) What a great time. It truly WAS the best kept secret in the Air Force!!mailtosa_cherry@yahoo.com

George "Doc" Holiday - Senior Airman - tour of duty July 6, 1986 - 87.

I checked in to the airman's barracks on that rainy Summer night; reported to duty the next morning as the Admin Clerk for the Director of Oprations (DO) who was Major David "Papa Bear" Brantley. He had a Super (SMSgt Dave--can't remember the name right now) who obviously had been in-country too long. After about 2 months of supporting DO, I soon migrated to the head shed to be the NCOIC of Admin. CC at the time was Lt Col "Smilin" Milan Jackson, SMSgt "Mean" Gene Dyke was the shirt; 1Lt Christine Wheeler (later--Wiley) was the Exec. SSgt James "Pat" Patrick was the Orderly Room NCOIC, and of course--Ms. Lily Gacyan was the secretary. Oh yeah...Milo was the house-boy of the head shed.

Other Interesting Characters that starred on my episode: SSgt "Ski" The Mailman MSgt Jim Mintseveris Services (Dining Hall) SMSgt "Big" Randy ??? Supt, Radar Maintenance Sgt "Dan" Finnell Admin Clerk, Radar Maintenance SMSgt James Patrick Supt, Disaster Preparedness SSgt "Tony-D" Daniels NCOIC, OJT SSgt David "Tuck" Tucker NCOIC, Refrigeration & Air Cond. SSgt Allen Scott Scope Dope TSgt "Eggy" & the Gang A bunch of Red Horse Guys SMSgt Bianco Supt, CE Bobby Williams WASCOM Mgr TSgt James Hill Carpentry Shop Memories of "Wally World".

I'll give you my recollection of a significant event. An old WW-II bomb (with a live warhead) was found in the petroleum plant outside the base (just before The Joker club). Bomb was extracted (by EOD teams from Clark and Kadena) from beneath the earth and brought up to Wally World. Our CE guys dug a hole in the coral at the bottom of the cliff; the bomb was buried their and detonated. Made one heck of a noise and shook the place. I was up in a helicopter taking pictures (for the Commander).

John R. Fuller SGT - Security Police - Dec 1987 - Mar 1988

Arrived at Wallace I believe in December, 1987 and left around March 1988.
I was TDY from Castle Air Force Base as a Security Policeman. I remember
the wild times at Wallace and still wonder at what became of everyone. I
ate dog that tasted like goat, and did the dangerous stunts while surfing
jeepnies.

I don't tell everyone everything of what we did while there, but
it still is fresh in my mind as if it was yesterday. I am curious as to the
outcome of a security incident that happened just before I left. Three NPA
fighters infiltrated their way onto base via boats and searched for a
Filipino officer that reportedly ripped them off.

The TDY cops along with the permanent party personnel and Filipino security personnel searched the
entire base all night to no avail. We suffered one incident where one armed
party bumped into another in the night during the search. A few bruised
egos was all that suffered along with my poor M16 that took a dunk in the
South China Sea that night. I read through the notes left here on the
website and did not recognize any names. I was SRA John R. Fuller and
promoted to Sgt John R. Fuller while there. I left the Air Force and
susequently entered the U.S. Army in 1992 as an Infantry Officer. I
presently reside in Texas with my wife and son. Mailto:jsjfuller4@alpha1.net

James Craig Williams aka "CW" Ssgt duty section 1961 OL-F/NAVAIDS Tech (TACAN) mar87-mar88

Remember mostly the friendships-Joan, June, St. T, Fred Dog, John Maloney, RJ and for the life of I can't remeber the name of the flat topped fella from Alabama, Bill Beale (bowling and darts)Andy and the list goes on! mailto:elloco83@msn.com

Robert "Casey" Ray - SGT in the SP's - Tour of duty Dec 1987 to July 89

I truly loved my time there. I married a local girl named Loida Hufana. She died of breast cancer in December of 1996. I loved playing softball on the mound of coral (still have a piece of coral in my palm to prove it). I wish I had a Wascom burger today, they were great, so was the French Onion Soup. I worked with Kelly Schliesch, Larry Kemp, Jimmy Best, Tony Doyka, Bob Dow, A1C Timmerman, plus others who's names I have forgotten. The DOD were the best to work with. Dan Pader was a DOD and he was the best man at my wedding. I remember Lee Greenwood coming to the base and singing "I'm proud to be an American". I also remember seeing some Filipno Girls singing the country western song, "My Baby is American Made", that is something I will never forget. Al Spurlock was the postman there. I would like to hear from others who were stationed there with me. mailto: raysrus@knology.net

David Ulery MSgt. Supply 1986-87

I just found this site and it is great. Stationed there in 1986-1987. Worked in supply with L P a local national. Was replaced by(don;t remember) but he was replaced by Emmit Davis who I think is still in the Philippines. People don't believe I was stationed by the Ocean with a great view. Now I have the picture to prove it. Lt. Col. Johnson was the Commander who came up from 13 th AF. The first shirt was Smsgt Dykes and thanks to a Sgt. in the orderly room, keep me off the pork report for the whole year. Supply and transportation was the 2 time Base softball champs. The WASCOM club manager was nicknamed " Snake". Smsgt Bryson was radar NCOIC, SSgt Hammer was vehicles(he did several tours there). There was a awesome local national named Thelma who bowled with us. She carried a 160 + average. I was Treasurer of the Top Four. Cheated on my yearly aerobics run, which was hard to do since the commander ran with us. There was a SSgt Security policeman who got the NCOIC of MWR busted and he lost his assignment to Baguio. Wallace was a great assignment and went back several times when I was stationed at Clark for 4 years after that. Great site. Please Update Email

Nato Vasquez T/SGT, 848 ACWs Ops 1986-1987 1991- Closure

I was stationed at Wallace twice. The first time 1986-1987, this was my second assignment. My roommate was Darel White, who is a MSgt now and soon will retire. I dropped of my bags and after our introduction he asked me, “So what do you want to do?”, I said “I want to meet the people” and so off we went! We had a lot of fun with our friend Randy Jerman. Made many trips to Bagio on Jeepney number 10 with Freddy as the driver. What a blast. The second tour was in 1991. I have the honor of being the last 276 or 1C5 to get stationed there. I wasn’t the last to leave, I think Sue Oswald was, but we closed down the base after the Mountain blew up and no new agreement would be made. I continued in the AF and retired in 2003. I loved the PI. mailto:nato@btel.com

Dave Blersch, 1961st OL-F from Aug 86 - Aug 87

.I was stationed at Wallace as a ground radio specialist with the 1961st OL-F from Aug 86 - Aug 87. I worked with some great people their; Heyward Kerns, Rob Brisco, John Strezbala, Randy Benefield, "Twinky", Ron Lowe (I think), Barb Warren, Raul, Joan, and many others. One thing that sticks in my mind is the damn octopus that clung to my face while snorkeling at the beach; scared the hell out of me. Email: dwblersch@hotmail.com

Keith M. Love T/SGT OPS Tour of duty Oct 86 - Oct 87

I was a scope dope there when I was not playing golf in Bagio, Diving off the coast of the driftwood, or closing the Joker bar. I lived in Felix across the street from WASCOM manager Ceasar Ramos. I lived with Kurt Carlton. In fact here are some pics of Panama city this summer on this boat. http://community.webshots.com/album/99581812eeYNdu I married a local girl and we divorced but I have two gorgeous girls, Kelly & Kaitlin. I ended up remarrying another Wallace alumni. Her name was Ginger Pittman in those days. I just hit 19 years (Dec 03) and will stay till 22. Ginger is an Oncology RN, and after working 12 years at the famous Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, I convinced her to marry and we now live in Hawaii.

We have have talked about making the Wallace Reunion in Panama City we read about on this site. I had many fun nights playing in the local dart league. I remember faces but names have been forgotten. I have met up and keep in touch with a few folks, if you want their email let me know. Dean Wineland, Clint Sherbondy, Kurt Carlton, Joe Kozuch, Dave Bixby and obviously Ginger. I had Augie Arndt email but lost it. Mike Murray is now a CMSgt and if anyone knows Unger, I would like to hook up with that nut again. Some folks might remember Kurt, Dean and I all owned monkeys and occasionally they would get loose and stir up quite a fuss in the neighborhood. But offer a kid 100 Pesos and they would hunt them down and bring them back alive.

I still have the video I took of the WASCOM wet T-Shrt contest of 1987. Skin all over the place!!!! keith_m_love@yahoo.com

Brad Thompson SSGT Radar tech 86-88 and NCOIC of the Height radar tower second tour

Enjoyed every minute of it!. Also worked as slot machine mechanic during second stay (Kept me and the wife from playing them). Ran the J and Angeles. Too many stories to list. Was there during the 1990 earthquake. It threw test equipment off the shelves and cracked walls and streets. The tidal wave scare didn't help either. One of the most helpless feelings a person can have. Just above being in an airplane that is falling out of the sky. Became a statistic in 87 when I married Jocelyn (a filipina). Stayed married for 14 years with her. I retired AF and am site manager of a radar site in South America (got used to warm weather of PI). Anyone know of any good technician jobs there in the Philippines? I'm available! Plan on traveling back to PI if the terrorist climate there subsides. Email: tiredtiger99@yahoo.com brad

Joan Ruiz - Civilian Employee 1979 - 89 (OL-F, 1961CG) Thanks for creating this website!

JR Robinson Capt. 1987-1988 Chief-StanEval

I arrived via C-12 (thanks to the 13AF DO needing flight time) December 4, 1987 and was met at the San Fernando airport by Capt Chris Larson, whose greeting was “welcome to the land of the not quite right—cleared for weird”. Having just come from a tour at the 552 ACW /AWACS and knowing 2 more fellow AWACers were PCSing behind me I could only smile. We started the AWACer turnover from the Tyndall Air Defense mob of weapons directors who had dominated the officer ranks for the last year. Great folks like Chris, Teddy White & Lou Bob Christie were supplanted by Mac McNamara, Face Davis and Jeannie Millar. Then there were the first assignment second lieutenants; Stu, Dean-o & Simpleton--talk about outa-control!. Oh yeah, couple of those second lieutenants are Colonels now. Hence their real names will not be mentioned! Then there was Capt Tiger Mike Revere, the illustrated man with tattoos and Cam Burke who with Trez became my running partners for trips to Camp John Hay and many weeknight dinners at the dorm.

Did I mention our DO Cliff Renke, who learned that hard way about spilling flaming drambuie on dacron can get real ugly--we took pity and put out his flaming pants with a pitcher of beer. Can't forget candle light crud games at the local bar and long crazy nights at the Mascot disco club downtown. The diving was awesome, lost a dive camera off Fag reef at 125 feet at the WWII tanks and went back two days later and found it. Joe the One armed bonka-boat driver was the best, never had to worry where you surfaced, he was always right there! Mike Murray, Jerry the cop, Stu, Trez, what great dive partners. Oh yeah Lt Trez Pritchard, tall red head, hard to miss. Charlie Crew commander with TSgt Larry Dillard as her crew chief, what a team. Trez and I are both retired and have three kids. And thankfully they all look like her! Absolutely one of the best years of my life. Man I miss Red Horse, San Miguel and the Driftwood Bar! So here is to all the folks that had an opportunity to spend a year at Wallace, and like me, felt a little guilty calling it a remote assignment. Mailto:johnrobinson@cox.net

Malou Ortega (now) Lewis - Civ Employee 1987-91 Education and Training

I worked at Education and Training and as a registrar for Central Texas College. I remember organising a "Tagalog" class and the first thing they want to learn were the "bad" words. What i enjoyed most were the shows like Tops in Blues, Kool and the Gang, Loreta Lyn and the talent contests that were organised by Chris and yours truly. Then we have the "olympics" amongst the ladies with sports like swimming, darts, basketball, bowling and running.

I ran third hahaha. I thought i was not gonna make it whilst running. I remember going with the guys during their basketball games with the locals, and i used to be mocked and cursed by locals for supporting the team. We used to have competition amongst all department re: softball. I lost my voice cheering. There was also a time when the ladies needed 1 more person to compete softball at Clark AB and they asked me to join. I did have a knowledge of the game but not that good. Whew, all i remember was this big solid lady from Clark team coming towards me for a home run and of course I was on her way---I ended up landing on my bum with my feet up in the air, and didnt know where i was. HAhaha.

Played bowling with Lily Gacayan, and Capt Frey married my cousin but unfortunately i think they're divorced now. I also remember an international medical group with the help of Wallace AS who performed "circumcisions" on local kids. That sight was very rewarding!!! Thanks guys!!!! The hardest and saddest thing I remember was when the base closed, Melinda, Alice Aukshun and I stopped the bus at the Poro Community School on their way to Clark, and gave the guys flowers.Kids were waving at them and I couldnt help but cry. mailto: malou@austarnet.com.au

Jerry Lockart - A1C Security Police Tour date April to Oct 1988 TDY from 15th SP's Hickam AFB

I was TDY to Wallace AS from Apr-Oct 1988. I was assigned to the SPs there & thoroughly enjoyed my time there at Wallace. Danny Pader is one of the best DoD guards I have ever met & then there was Lt Sam (I can't remember his last name). Many people there made Wallace a location I wanted to be stationed at again, but Pinatubo fixed that for me. As a TDY cop there, it was a great time both on & off base. Anthony, the club's night manager was outstanding. Kelly, Tony, Bob Dow just to name a few of the Perm Party cops we worked with...Shawn, Ernie, Richie Rich (from Castle AFB) just to name a few of the TDY cops. Anne Marie was the hottest Power Pro I have ever seen to this day!! I miss the times at the Junction & shooting pool at the Joker. I look at the pictures of the area now & am amazed at how it has progressed so much over the last 20 years. If any of the DoD guys are reading this, please ask Danny if he ever forgets how to speak english (inside joke). mailto: supertrain69@yahoo.com

Anthony Oleksyn Sgt - Tour of duty - 1988-89

I was assigned to the Air Navigation Shop (TACAN). Part of the communication sq. My rank at the time was SGT USAF. What I remember most was, typhoon ruby that hit us hard and what a mess it made? I have a lot of photo's from that time @ walley world (wallace Air Station). I would gladly share them. Also I would love to hear from anyone that served around that time @ wallace Air Station . mailto: aoleksyn@paychex.com

Michael Holmbo: I was stationed at Wallace AS from Sept 1988-1990.

I was a Sgt (Currently a MSgt stationed at Lackland AFB). I remember this as my best station ever. I was one of only 14 Law Enforcement cops. The DoD guards were the best people I have ever served with). It didn't seem like work at all. This is where I met my wife (formerly Leonila Bautista DeRama. The thing I remember the most was the beaches, the people, and sitting out where the waves come in and relaxing (back cliffs). email:cubbies_fan@yahoo.com

Scott Trimarchi, SrA, 1961st Comm Group OL-F from May 1988 until December 1989 .

My roommate for most of the time was Eric Scott. I worked Telecom and Crypto Maintenance with then TSGT Randy Lampley as NCOIC (who I see also posted a comment), SSGT Jaime Ruiz and Eric. I see quite a few names of those I remember that were in "F Troop" such as Jim Truman, Ray Parker, Steve Kapp, Randy "Benny" Benefield, Anthony Oleksyn and Joan Ruiz (where's Jaime?). Had many great times during my 18 months there. Being at Wallace was an experience I will never forget and leaving was just as interesting. When we were under lock down during the coup attempt on Corazon Aquino in December 1989, Eric and I boarded the helicopter going back to Clark AB that brought in some supplies to Wallace as our DEROS dates had passed and our replacements were already on station. What a grand way to exit Wally World! I extended my tour there by 6 months under a program the USAF had at the time. By staying the extra 6 months I was given an opportunity to change my "dream sheet" and ultimately my next duty assignment. At the time they had me going to Beale AFB in CA and being from New York I wanted the East Coast. I ended up at Castle AFB in CA!

Ray Parker SSGT. Tour of duty 1988-1990 with 1961st Communications Sq. OL-F

... I had a GREAT time at Wallace! It was like living in one of those old WWII movies that portray the South Seas Islands/Orient as a laid back heaven --which Wallace was for the most part. Email: rparker803@tampabay.rr.com

Jason Nichols TSgt.. Tour of duty 1989-90

I was a Firefighter at Wallace. This was truly the best remote assignment ever. I worked with MSgt Mathews (Fire Chief), Charlie Barner (Deputy Chief), George McKee ( I think that's how you spell it), Bill 'Fish' Fisher, Constancio Maslang (Civilian) and many more. My greatest memories where hitting all the beach resorts, and partying with Villaneuva, the corrupt Fire Chief from San Fernando. There was this little hidden village between Baguio and San Fernando that was down a rocky road from the road that lead to Baguio (not Marco's highway). It had a hot springs pool and an old hotel. I dated a girl from Bagiuo (Angeli Tolentino) we frequented this place a lot. The earth quake happened while I was there, one year before Mt. Pinatubo blew it's top. email:

Ralph Sims, SGT. Tour of duty was May 1989 to May 1990 with the 848th ADS/SPOL Law Enforcement

(Now called Security Forces). My tour at Wallace has always held a special place in my heart. I have never known friends or comrades like those that I worked (and played) with in the P.I. I have been actively seeking many of my DOD coworkers that I lost contact with after the base closure. To Isip, De Guzman, Rolly Garcia, Samson, Ventura, Calica, B.B., and all the rest, "Kamusta?". And especially to Danny Pader (Para Kong Kapatid), whom I haven't heard from since 1992, "Sulatan Mo Ako." email to: rsims142@comcast.net and I'd also like to share stories with anyone that was stationed at Wallace over the years. I look forward to hearing from you all.

Steve Kapp SSGT I was stationed at Clark Air Base from 1982 to 1988, then went to Wallace Air Station in 1988 until the sad day it closed in September of 1991. I was a SSgt with the 1961st Communications Group (OL-F). I would have to say that it was the best 3 years of my life. I married a girl from that area and we bought 600 square meters of land near the former base. In 3 years after my youngest daughter graduates from high school, we will semi retire in the La Union area. But I don't think it will ever be as nice as when the base was open. I am retired from the USAF living in Oklahoma. Mailto:kalbosjk@sbcglobal.net

Rich Allen, SD Tech from October 1988 to October 1989

What a great assignment during the year I was there. The sign at the gate was correct...”The best kept secret in the Air Force” If you had to do a remote, there was no better place! I’m now retired after 26 great years. After Wallace I was assigned to Avon Park Bombing Range in FL. then Shaw, AFB, SC. After that I spent 12 years on the AWACS and my last four years in, I was an Air Battle Management (ABM) instructor at the ABM Schoolhouse at Tyndall AFB, FL. Now I’m an Analyst with Zel Technologies, a Government contractor. I live in Panama City Beach, FL with my gorgeous wife of 13 years Debbie.

Here are a few of my favorite moments:

I was on shift one night before an exercise sitting SD tech and the ops phone rings. It was Lt Col Garrigan (CC) calling to kick off the recall. I answered the phone, and he told me who he was and I said, “Well Col Garrigan what a surprise it is hearing from you this early”. He said to start a recall, gave me the start time and hung up. When everyone was assembled, he went into a rant about the manner that I answered the phone, and said he didn’t want to hear F----in Bob Hope!! God...not a morning person!

When ever we had a helo up from Clark, they would call in for clearance to land. I would always let them know that they were second in the pattern right behind the flock of sea gulls. They got a big kick out that call...It was the little things.

One time we had a Commander’s Call and I was the only person in the ops room. All of a sudden an F-4 calls up requesting a bubble check. Not thinking, I cleared him in for the low high speed pass over the radar domes. Then I asked for his position and he comes back with 5 miles out. Now at 400 mph there was very little time, so I pushed the radio transmit button to contact the DO, and just as he said go ahead, there was that earth-shattering sound of jet noise that shook the entire building...then I said “Bubble Check”. When he keyed his mike to say “copy” all I could hear was laughter. The pilot requested a second pass, and I let them know so they could go out and watch. Watching the jets was great fun when they would fly very low and wave as they went by. Like I said, it was the little things.

Now for my crowning achievement: Only a very few people know about this, but I think the statutes of limitations have ran out. One month Wallace AS was number 1 on the list of cases of VD. So, on a night shift one of my crew dogs drew a picture of a condom with a big smile and little arms, a great cartoon looking picture. So Tony Dunn and I got the idea of “Wally Wubba” a hero to all that would assist us in decreasing the cases of VD on the Station. Each night we would come up with witty sayings and caption them in a cloud over Wally’s head. We would make copies of them and post them on the dorm doors, chow hall, and every place we could think of. We even removed the copier identification number so no one could tell what copier was used. To give you an idea of some of Wally’s sayings, this is how they read;

Wally Wubba says: “Don’t be silly, wrap your willy” or “Wrap that rascal” There were quite a few more, but they were a bit too racy for the web site. Needless to say the leadership was pissed. They had no idea where the copies came from since there were no ID numbers on the pages. Oh did I say that we replaced the ID numbers on the copier when we were done? There were policy letters developed, lectures from the leadership, and general bitchin’. We kept Wally Wubba alive for about a month and a half until they started talking about Article 15s and jail time. Up until now only four people knew about the Wally Wubba caper. What a great year that was!!! Now you know the rest of the story.

Thanks for putting together the web site and letting me reminisce. Too bad Wallace had to go.

Eric Davis, A1C, - Assigned as SSO Mar 89 - Feb 90

Wallace was my first assignment out of Tech School. I arrived at Wallace seven days after my wedding. Two words: culture shock. The ride from Clark really showed me what I was in for during the next year. I saw dog roasting and people having bowl movements near the side of the road. Whoa. Living in the dorms and having the radar zap the TV every pass was a little wierd. Health hazard? Nah. I still look at my Prisoner of Wallace (POW) card (outpost card) every so often. My Wallace camo hat hangs in my home office, along with other 'stuff' from wood carvers village.

I also remember the Philippine AF guys in the Ops room bundled up in parkas and gloves. Oh, and writing backwards on the glass map was fun too. Not. Felt useless there since every contact I had on watch was "Friendly 69!"

Fortunately, I made the best of being away from my bride by scuba diving (a lot) from "Ocan Breeze Resort", took some college courses, and had many trips up to Baguio. I mainly hung around with SrA Robbie Hastings. My supervisor lived off base with his wife so I really got to know the locals and their lifestyle. All in all, I had a great time, what an experiance. I Met a lot of great people, made some close friends and keep in touch with some of them to this day. I still remember the locals clearing the dance floor so I could dance to the only Depeche Mode song they had.

After I left Wallace, I spent the remaining nine years of my AF career in the Colorado area: Buckley AFB (2SWS), then Falcon AFB (8SWS-ALERT). I am now an Engineer Lead for Northrop Grumman Corporation at Buckley AFB. We bought 40 acres south of Bennett CO in Nov 04 and now we're living the country lifestyle. James (big Jim) Truman TSgt Jan 88 to Feb 91 NCOIC Wideband/Tech Control, OL-F 61st Com

By far Wallace Air Station was my most rewarding and memorable
assignment during my 28 years of active duty Air Force service. From my
first day on site, to my last I always found something good to say about
Wallace. The people were the best, Gerald Singleton, Steve Kapp, Ray
Parker were just a few of the GIs I had the honor of working with during
this time period.

I also worked with some of the most dedicated Local
Nationals who helped make OL-F the best comm. detachment in the
Philippines. Mr. Raul Brioso was the civilian comm. tech who was the
continuity for the shop, and the knowledge he passed on to me on how
things worked at Wallace was the key to my success as NCOIC of the shop.

The telephone operators were also very professional; Shirley, Marlene,
Wilma, and Jean were truly the best. In fact, they were even able to
tech some of us maintenance guys how to operate the old Stromberg
Carlson switchboard that was used at Wallace from the early 1960s to the
end of the GI era. Joan and Cora were our material controllers and did
an outstanding job of making sure the parts we ordered got to us and not
into the hands of the folks down in the "Black Market"; kudos to you
ladies!

There was never a dull moment at Wallace. How about the WASCOM/First
Five Wet T-shirt contest in May 1990? Ouch, my head still hurts just
thinking about it. I was one of the judges that night! Skin-to-win
ladies!

I have been back to La Union seven times since I left in 1991. I married
my wife Gemma Galang who grew up in the San Fernando area on trip number
five.

A lot has changed since the Air Force left La Union, but the tranquility
of the beach is still the same. If you are in the area, make sure you
stop by the canteen at VFW Post 9892 for a cold beer with the boys
because you might see some familiar faces there from the past.

After Wallace AS, I had assignments in Alaska, Louisiana, Korea,
Germany, and finally finished my career at Vandenberg AFB, CA and
retired as a SMSgt. I am currently a GG-11 and Deputy Flight Commander
for the Intel Systems Flight, 547th Intelligence Sq, Nellis AFB, NV and
my e-mail address is: BigJim1957@cox.net

Ronald Pierson SSGT I was stationed at Wallace Air Station in 1991 until it closed in September of 1991. I was a SSgt with the 1961st Communications Group (OL-F). and maintained the Tactical Air Navigation Set and a Wind speed and Direction set. It was the best tour I have ever served in my career. I also dream about going back to La Union and retiring in the Wallace area. But it will be after my kids graduates from HS. And Steve Kapp ( He was stationed with me at Wallace ) is right it will never be as nice as when the base was open. I am retired from the USAF living in Texas. Email: ron_pierson@yahoo.com

Scott .A Smith - Civ Contractor 90-91 Avionics Supervisor for EC Services

I was a Civilian Contractor at Wallace from 90-91 I worked as the Avionics Supervisor for EC Services. I flew, recovered and repaired RPV's for the Air Force and Navy. I was there for the earthquake, and it scared the poop right out of me. Being from Nebraska, I only knew about tornadoes. I remember playing darts at the WASCOM, and eating some pretty good food there. It was funny, I went to the PI to visit my father Roger Smith who is retired Air Force and still living over there, and ended up working for EC. Wasn't planning on it, just sort of happened. It was the best time of my life. I love the people and the culture. I would love to hear from anybody who knew me back then, or anybody who knew my father. They can contact me at scott.smith@charter.net Or they can call me at 402-902-4422 I would especially like to hear from anybody who might know the whereabouts of my father. After I came back to the States, he and his wife moved back to his wife's home island and I have not heard from him since. He called me once looking to borrow some money, and that is the last I have heard from him. Thank you in advance for any help I might receive.
