"The Descendants of Philip Wilkin, Sr." was originally collected by Stanley H. Bennington of Highland County, Ohio around 1954. It was originally published in December 1985 by Kimberly Marie Jacobs and N. Charleene Tarr. They have provided the preface below which describes the source documents and the data collection process with appropriate disclaimers as to the accuracy of the data.

With the permission of Ms. Jacobs and Tarr, we have undertaken the continued editing and updating of the document. We scanned the document into digital form and have made editorial changes and minor revisions as to format as well as data. The book was reissued from the digital document in July 1997. It contains approximately 2,880 descendants and spouses. Omissions and wrong birth order are the occasional errors we have found to date. There are also spelling and punctuation errors from the scanning process. Any help you can provide to verify or correct this book would be greatly appreciated. Preface

Kimberly M. Jacobs and N. Charleene Tarr

"The Descendants of Philip Wilkin Sr" was collected by Stanley H. Bennington of Hillsboro, Ohio about 1954. He spent several years working on these papers and visited Virginia to obtain information on Godfrey Wilkin. He states that he used four books: "State Centennial History", "History of the Early Settlement of Highland County" written by Daniel Scott, "The Roush Family in America Volumes 1 & 3", and "Ancestors and Descendants of Henry Wilkin" as collected by John A. Wilkins, for his papers.

We could not find the papers of John A. Wilkins but give you this account as listed by Stanley Bennington:

"Henry Wilkin"

Virginia and Highland County, Ohio with an account of his ancestors and descendants from data collected by John A. Wilkins.

On October 17, 1854, the descendants of Henry Wilkin, from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio met at the home of Abraham Wilkin in Highland County, Ohio in order to plan for some kind of an organization. After discussing plans and having a social time, they adjourned to meet the next day at the home of Henry Wilkin, Jr. where an organization was perfected. At this meeting, a short history of the family was given and is the foundation for this book. All the children of Henry and Rachel Wilkin were living at this time and each filed a record of their family. These records have been added to ever since. In 1902, the hundredth anniversary of the Wilkin arrival was celebrated near New Market, Highland County, Ohio. I have made two trips to the Shenandoah Valley and Woodstock, Virginia, and examined records in the clerk’s office. My object is to preserve these records for all time.

Sept. 1923, Indianapolis, Indiana Ora W. Lesh

From the Hillsboro Dispatch dated Sept. 19, 1902 Wilkins Centennial: Thousands enjoy the happy occasion. The day was fine. The Wilkin Centennial Reunion held in the J. D. Booth grove near New Market on Thursday, Sept. 11, 1902, was the largest gathering held in that part of the county in many years. Godfrey Wilkin was president and Thomas M. Wilkin, Secretary. This is the one hundredth anniversary of the settlement of the family in Highland County, Ohio."

The original papers of Stanley Bennington were typed both sides on onion skin paper. We had a copy of a copy of these papers. We did our best to ensure accuracy, checking with the Roush books when possible and using the McBride’s "Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio 1805-1880" as a reference.

We feel sure that there are corrections to be made. We also feel many of the families should be updated, we would appreciate receiving any corrections or additions so that changes can be made before any additional printings. Additions or corrections can be sent to: N. Charleene Tarr, 8860 Jamaica Road, Germantown, Oh 45327.
