90 days to prepare

This 72 124 Sport coupe was put together as an SCCA IT-C Solo One car to beat the Datsuns. It did.

In rapid-fire 3 month succession, we stripped it down to the shell, rebuilt the motor, straightened the body and did the 3 color paint job. Body all stock except custom air dam. Colors (black, white & energy yellow) chosen to enhance body lines and look intimidating. It was.

Rear seat & parcel tray removed then replaced by aluminum bulkhead. Headliner and rails removed. Sound deadening tar chiseled off floor pan. Interior splattered with gray/white/black Zolatone. Full 6-point roll cage custom made. Fiberglas bucket seat and 5-point restraint installed. Racemark steering wheel. Custom gas & brake pedals. Stock 140mph & 9K gauges. Added oil temp gauge.

Engine was basically stock 2bbl 1608 with mild mods,  as allowed for the class. Other mods included oil cooler, windage tray, electronic ignition, battery relocate, aluminum radiator, kill switch. Suspension was stock rear springs cut, heavier fronts, Bilsteins & Konis. Added light rear sway bar and heavier front. Rest was stock per class prep rules. After 2 seasons, car did very well. Retired to street as a 140 miles per day commuter.

As of 3/99, this car is in the process of extensive modifications by the present owner, Peter Horvath of SoCal. The body shell has been removed. A full tube chassis with coil-over shocks and independent rear suspension has been fabricated. The turbo powerplant is to be determined. Project has been on-going for 3 years.

These photos were taken at one of the final events of RIR in July 1988. The legendary track is now a shopping mall 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Rest in peace, good friend
