Here are some web pages I've found very useful for HTML (hypertext markup language) composing and editing. Note that I don't use any editing software, so don't expect too many bells and whistles on my pages.

A step-by-step guide through all facets of home page design and building, from the basics to counters and javascript.
NCSA Beginner's Guide to HTML
Part of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It's what I used to get started.
Getting Started with HTML
A short introduction to writing HTML with a text editor, from W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium. With links to an advanced HTML page, a page on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and a utility to help fix markup errors automatically.
Interactive Tutorial for Beginners and beyond
Seventeen excellent "MiniChapters" from basic to advanced, with additional sections on promotion, web design, and miscellaneous references.
KISS HTML, a tutorial on writing HTML from scratch.
If you follow these tutorials, you can develop a web page for yourself without resorting to an HTML Editor, or outside help. Even if you use an editor, it is helpful to know what the HTML tags are and how they are used.
Creating Web Sites
Netscape's web page templates and clip-art resources that web page creators can copy, with a link to OpenStudio, Netscape's resource for creating, designing and producing compelling websites.
