ABOUT THE BOAT

The Thistle is a 17 foot high performance centerboard sloop ideal for 2 or 3 person racing, or daysailing for up to 6. It was designed in 1945 by Sandy Douglass, and still remains the benchmark for class tradition and one-design performance over a half-century later. It is a beautiful boat that performs equally well in light, moderate, or heavy airs. It's classic hull form combines 19th century elegance with a high performance planing hull. The powerful large roach mainsail and fractional jib is a fast, efficient, and easily handled rig that can be handled by couples in most airs. The hull was originally constructed from hot-molded plywood by the same process that built many WWII aircraft and PT Boats. It is now constructed by several class approved builders in fiberglass, and Hull #4000 is approaching. However, tight class controls have kept the older wood and glass boats very competitive. In fact, Hull #1, built in 1945, won the President's division at 2000 nationals.

JOIN THE TRADITION

Thistle Fleet #176 are the stewards of the Thistle class tradition in eastern Pennsylvania. We are a member fleet of the Nockamixon Sail Club, a group of friendly sailors racing a variety of classes on beautiful Lake Nockamixon in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The club owns race committee and rescue boats and runs well organized races and regattas under the US Sailing Portsmouth Handicap system almost every-other weekend from April 5th thru October 31st. The Nockamixon Sail Club's newsletter, the "Compass", is as good as a sail club newsletter gets!

Even if you don't own a Thistle, you can join the fleet and the tradition. Associate Class and Fleet memberships are encouraged. Join the fleet. Sail the boats. Learn for yourself why the Thistle has remained popular for over 50 years.
