Poetry of José Martí - Versos sencillos More commonly known to many as the lyrics for the song Guantanamera. In fact, these are the beautiful words of a man who loves and misses his country. Written while he was in exile from Cuba and a free lance writer and reporter for various newspapers. When he finally returned, it was to fight for independence. He was killed in battle on May 19,1895, duriong the "first war" for Cuban independence which would later evolve into the Spanish American War in 1898.
