Campaign Financing By Matt Rettner S enator John McCain (R-AZ) is running for president on only a single issue, campaign finance reform. He believes that candidates should not be allowed to receive corporate donations or union money. This, he thinks, will minimize corruption in government, through promoting sound, honest politicians. McCain who trails in the Republican primary behind George W. Bush by 55% and $50 million, still believes in his campaign. Since the opening new Hampshire debate, he has been gaining momentum tremendously.Although every one of McCains spending bills has been defeated and he has no support from other Republican senators, the country appears to be embracing his idea of spending, because polls show most Americans support some fund raising restrictions. Currently, candidates face few fund raising restrictions. As a result, candidates like George W. Bush have over raised over $60 million, while McCain, who follows strictly his belief in raising money only through personal donations has under $10 million. Should any of McCains bills be passed, Americans would no longer complain of candidates "buying elections." |
