No Rules

I believe that one of the reasons that people tend to shy away from taking efforts to be proper in their behavior is because there are all those rules to learn.  Which fork is the salad fork?  Do I walk on the left or right?  What did Miss Manners say about proper colors of ties?

Well, I firmly believe that being a gentleman isn't about knowing a lot of rules of etiquette, it's about the attitude that you want people around you to be comfortable and honored.

The comfortable side comes from relaxing a bit, and avoiding firm set rules of etiquette, and never ever commenting or noticing, for that matter, when another person breaches one of those rules.  A gentleman would never notice that another person was eating his or her salad with a dinner fork.  But, if another seemed in distress over which fork to use, a gentleman would find a way to discreetly let his friend know what he knows.

So, set aside any concept that you have about whether there are rules of etiquette, and lets just consider some thoughts about appropriate behavior.  Click on the icon on the left to choose an area about which you would like to read my thoughts, and please feel free to send me your own thoughts.  You can write to me at parlangua@worldnet.att.net.
