COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learn techniques used in conducting instrumentals and vocal ensembles. The course includes in-depth study of patterns, podium techniques, picth tendencies, and rehearsal techniques.
OBJECTIVES:
1)to acquire a knowledge of the conductor's multifaceted role in making music.
2)to master traditional and contemporary time beating patterns, while reflecting the indicated musical style.
3)to develop expressive techniques with the baton, face, eyes, and body.
4)to obtain techniques for cueing and handling all types of fermatas.
5)to enhance skills in score reading and transposition, with emphasis on score analysis for rehearsal preparation.
6)to acquire knowledge of basic musical terminology for cultivation of interpretive skills.
7)to become familiar with rehearsal techniques for achieving superior ensemble tone production, balance, intonation, rhythmic precision, and musical expression.
8)identify instrumental and vocal activities and techniques appropiate for small and large instrumental and vocal performance, at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.
9)understand musical characteristics, composers, and works of pre-Baroque, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth-Century.

EXAMS (100) AND QUIZZES (10)POINTS EACH ARE GIVEN AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS, LATE COMERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE PART IN THESE ACTIVITIES.
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXAMS, A FINAL PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF AN ANALYSIS OF A MAJOR COMPOSITION, SELECTED BY THE PROFESSOR, AND A "15 MINUTE" REHEARSAL, WITH A VOCAL OR INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE, ON THIS COMPOSITION.
Evaluation of your "grade" and the grading scale will be discussed by the professor at the beginning of the semester. It is "your" responsibility to contact the professor if you missed this lecture.
***No test/exam can be made up without "valid" documentation of the reason the test/exam was missed. 1) Signing up for the class "late," 2) automotive, personal, and children hardships are not valid justifications.
