John Waldsmith

Stereo Views of Sandusky and Put-in-Bay by A. C. Platt - A.C. Platt was the leading photographer in Sandusky, Ohio from about 1870 to the 1880s.  He documented in stereo the thriving port city on Lake Erie and the tourist resort of Put-in-Bay.  We will show views of the county seat building and a series of the city from the rooftop.  Also views of the steamboats and docks.  Of particular interest are the resort hotels and pavilions at Put-in-Bay plus Gibraltar Island which featured the summer home of Jay Cooke.

Dennis Green Favorite Stereo Slides - A collection of 50 favorite stereo slides with background music.
Jay Horowitz

Experts from “Space-3D: A NASA Holiday Lecture” - Every December NASA Glenn Research Center hosts a holiday lecture on topics of broad interest to the public, particularly children. This past year Jay Horowitz gave a 3D presentation showing stereo images of the sun, moon and planets, how NASA uses stereo imagery in it's research, and a little bit of the history of stereo photography.

John Hart & Jerry Oldaker

Fractal Fantasy - This program features the incredible 3-D fractal artwork of Jerry Oldaker, stereo photography by John Hart, and original music by Marie Rhines. Jerry's images are animated in a number of ways using ProShow Producer to generate complex motions of the compositions.  Fractal structures move around and through each other.  Many scenes are composed with multiple objects translating differentially in X, Y, and Z over a distant background. The intent was to include as much motion as was practical in order to enhance the digital presentation of what is basically static ("still") art and photography.  This program won the Paul Wing and Best Video awards at NSA2008.

Barb & Paul Gauche (Directors) On-Site Stereo Competition - Each participant can enter up to 3 stereo images (film or digital). Entries must be received by 11:30 am.  These will be judged by a panel of 3 judges and the top-scoring images will receive awards.  The audience will vote for their favorite image and select the “People’s Choice” for an extra award.

Lee Pratt - Lee is a Fellow of PSA (FPSA) and a Master Level 5 stereo photographer. He has been interested in 3D since the 1970’s. He is a member of PSA, NSA, ISU, SSA, and several camera clubs.

Dwight Harvey - Dwight Harvey first became interested in stereo photography in high school in about 1969, when his grandmother gave him an old stereoscope and her old stereoscope cards. When he saw a two-lensed camera at a yard sale 12 years later, he knew that it could take pictures like the ones on the old cards, and he snatched up the Busch Verascope for $25. But, he did not really get started until an experienced photographer from Wisconsin named Harry Richards introduced him to the Stereoscopic Society of America (SSA) at the Richmond NSA Convention in 1998.  About the same time, his daughter began playing tournament softball, and Dwight began to buy equipment to take stereoscopic pictures of her ball games with a 35mm SLR twin-rig .It wasn't long until he was immersed in the hobby.  In July, 2003, Dwight took the plunge into competitive PSA exhibitions. In his first exhibition, the 2003 PSA International, Dwight took a gold medal "Best of Show." Since then, he has had pictures accepted for exhibition throughout the United States and in England and Australia . Over the last couple of years, Dwight has spent more time concentrating on larger projects involving documentary photography.  Dwight has also been a member of the Potomac Society of Stereo Photographers in Washington, D. C. since about 2003, and currently serves as Society treasurer and bulletin editor.

Andrea L. Shetley - Andrea L. Shetley, APSA, has been involved in photography for more than 30 years, and stereo photography for the last 14 years. She uses Pentax digital SLR bodies with an assortment of lens and accessories, an RBT stereo film camera, and a Kodak compact digital camera. Andrea is the past president of the Huntsville Photographic Society in Alabama . She also is a member of many other local, national, and international photography organizations, and has held or currently holds board positions in several. Andrea is the cofounder of the PSA Mid-Atlantic Chapter. She has received the PSA Joseph P. Fallon Award (for new membership work), the PSA Harold D. Lorimor Award (for leadership in photography), a PSA Stereo Division Chairman’s Appreciation Award, an Associate Honor in PSA (APSA), and the PSA Stuyvesant Peabody Memorial Award (for significant contribution to pictorial photography). She has given many programs and workshops to camera clubs and photography conferences nationwide; and has been published in several magazines (including cover shots). Andrea has a PSA 4-star stereo rating, competes in and judges photography competitions locally and internationally, and has received many top awards. Her interests are mostly nature-oriented, with emphasis on close-ups of flowers and insects (especially praying mantises). Other subjects she enjoys are architecture, abstracts, and blacklight. Andrea currently resides in rural Fayetteville , Tennessee , with her four cats. She is landscaping her farm to create more opportunities for nature photography.

George Themelis - George (or DrT as he is better known in the stereoscopic community) discovered stereo photography and joined NSA in 1988. His first stereo camera was a Stereo Realist. In 1997 he helped start the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society (OSPS) in Cleveland. Today George keeps himself busy with a variety of stereo-related activities. He is the Editor of the OSPS newsletter “Stereogram” where he publishes stereo Tutorials every month, repairs stereo cameras and viewers and also buys/sells/trades stereo equipment and supplies for stereo photography (his web site is: www.drt3d.com). He also takes plenty of stereo pictures using slide film and various stereo cameras.

Timo Puhakka - Timo started in Stereo photography in the early 80s.  A close friend loaned him his Revere camera when he went backpacking through southern Britain . He then acquired a Kodak stereo camera for himself.  His interest in stereo helped get him a job as a Camera Technician at IMAX, although he was never given the IMAX stereo rig to work on.  He was instead responsible for the Space Shuttle In Cabin Camera until about 1991.  As the digital age came in and the blogs started to talk of the imminent demise of Kodachrome film, he started building digital stereo rigs based on IR synch.  He sold several of these rigs, but moved to Stereo Data Maker based cameras, as soon as he discovered this avenue.  He remains primarily a film photographer, preferring Kodachrome to everything else.  He has now upgraded his primary camera to a Wollensak (thank goodness for eBay), and he is dabbling in medium format with his Sputnik.  He has also started collecting select stereo cards and viewmaster reels, and has built several stereo viewers.

John Waldsmith - John began collecting stereo views in 1971. In the beginning he collected everything 3-D but eventually found that his money and space was limited enough that he had to specialize so he limited his stereo view collection to just views of Ohio by Ohio photographers or publishers.  John is a co-founder of the National Stereoscopic Association and a past vice-president, editor of Stereo World and librarian of the NSA Oliver Wendell Holmes Stereoscopic Research Library. He is also the author of Stereo Views, An Illustrated History and Price Guide. His wife Janet is retired after thirty years of teaching. John is also a licensed and bonded auctioneer and Janet helps him as his clerk and greatest fan.

Dennis Green - Dennis first discovered stereo photography when he found a Stereo Realist in a camera store in New England while touring with the U.S. Army Field Band in 1971.  After taking stereo images for a couple of years, his stereo activity went dormant for 20 years to be rekindled in 1993.  He joined the Detroit Stereographic Society in 1995 and started entering their themed competitions, as well as entering PSA competitions.  Now close to achieving his fifth PSA star (given for 288 acceptances of 75 different images), Dennis has put together this program of 50 of his favorite award winners from the Detroit competitions.  Dennis is also the newsletter editor for Detroit 's "Stereo Window", and is the chair for the 2009 Stereoscopic Society of America International Stereo Card Exhibition which will be judged at the NSA convention in Mesa in July."

Jay Horowitz - While pursuing stereoscopic imaging technology in my role as a scientific visualization specialist for NASA, I rekindled a long dormant interest in stereo photography. I now find many opportunities to mix work and pleasure. At NASA I produce computer generated 3D imagery of complex data as well as photographs of wind tunnels and rocket engines.  Outside work, I take photographs of friends, family, and anything the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society's competitions entice me to take. Equally fond and frustrated by both film and digital, I will gladly argue the merits of each over the other.

John Hart - John is a professor (emeritus) of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the University of Colorado .  He uses 3D imaging in his laboratory research in geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics, and especially likes to photograph subjects that stretch the limits of the medium in space and time. He also enjoys adventure sports like kayaking and canyoneering, which provide their own exciting 3D opportunities.

Jerry Oldaker - Jerry is a retired railroad engineer, who 5 years ago decided to focus on making large cross-eye prints of fractal scenes.  He developed methods and adapted software to the challenging task of creating high-resolution fractal art that approaches the boundaries of what is possible even on today's fastest multi-core PC's.  His print exhibition at NSA2008 won the Best Art Display award
