Stereoscopic Programs

1:00-2:00 Film Programs - 1
John Bueche (OSPS President)
John Waldsmith
George Themelis
Welcome & Opening Remarks
Lee Pratt What I Photograph - Stereo Biography with 50-100 slides, live narration and background music.  Lee will tell us how he got started in stereo photography, what equipment he is using, what pictures he likes to take, etc.
Ron Fross Favorite Stereo Slides - A collection of 50 favorite stereo slides with background music (no narration).
Andrea Shetley A Close-Up Collection - About 35 slides, 9 minutes long, with accompanying music on a CD, showing various close-up stereo images made with a single camera. Slides will be manually synchronized to the music.
Albert Sieg Different Images of the Palouse - The northeastern portion of Washington state and the western part of Idaho is called the Palouse, meaning lawn in French. Pastoral farm lands, barns, undulating hill patterns of green and gold, and old farm equipment are found here. This includes the last vestiges of an Americana that is quickly disappearing throughout our country. We will look for many of the different images of the Palouse.
George Themelis Hawaii 2007 - 3d pictures from our family trip to Hawaii last summer.
2:00-3:00 Film Programs - 2
John Waldsmith Historical Portraits - Portraits copied from stereoviews.
Lee Pratt (Director) 2007 PSA Stereo Sequence Exhibition - This has always been one of the most popular programs in our club.
3:00-4:00 Digital Programs - 1 - "The John Hart Spectacular"
John Hart Canyons of Dreams - 10 minutes - A canyoneer embarks on an historic adventure, involving the descent of huge 1000 foot waterfalls. This tiring expedition leaves him worn and exhausted. He falls asleep and has an incredible dream....
John Hart Wicked Liquid - 8 minutes - Action sequences of animated stills, intermixed with HD-video, serve up a tasty drink of the Wicked Liquid, as we raft and kayak the big water. This is a sort of technically-maxed-out "slide-show", illustrating what an enthusiastic amateur can do with available software and digital projection.
John Hart Dunes - 9 minutes - A romp through the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado explores opportunities for wild and wacky adventure sports including sand skiing, snow-show racing, and Halloween hiking, in a place admired by both humans and canines.
John Hart Liquid Magic - 12 minutes - We revisit the 1930's experiments of Harold Edgerton and photograph liquid splashes and droplet collisions in 3D. Special methods of drop injection, and the use of liquid dyes and reflected-gradient backgrounds, lead to dramatic images of both old and newly discovered phenomena.
4:00-5:00 Digital Programs - 2
Christopher Schneberger  The Strange Case of Dr. Addison and the Crosswell Twins (10 min.) - In the spring of 1908, Dr. Charles Addison disappeared. The noted botanist, amateur zoologist, and portrait photographer had been making a series of images of a young girl named Regina Crosswell.  Regina's twin sister Lydia had died in the winter, though the circumstances were unclear.  Dr. Addison, however, had become convinced that Lydia Crosswell had not entirely departed from our earthly plane.
Christopher Schneberger  A Case of Levitation: The Story of Frances Naylor (5 min.) - Frances Naylor's legs were amputated when she was only two years old, but when she was thirteen Frances began having powerful dreams that she could walk.  One morning, after waking from such a dream she leapt from bed and found she was able to levitate.  Her father made a number of stereo photographs of his daughter as she floated about their house
Lindel Salow (Chairman) 2008 NSA Convention - The 2008 NSA Convention this year is in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This program will highlight the city of Grand Rapids and the surrounding southwest Michigan area, the convention facilities and tours being planned.

Ron Fross - Ron is one of the more experienced members in our stereo club, having been introduced to stereo photography in 1977. He uses a Stereo Realist, twin Minolta cameras and an RBT S1. His film of choice is Fuji Provia. He also collects View-Master reels and stereo slides.

Andrea L. Shetley - Andrea L. Shetley, APSA, has been involved in photography for more than 30 years, and stereo photography for the last 13 years. She is at the 3-star level in the PSA Stereo Division. She uses Pentax digital SLR bodies with an assortment of lens and accessories, an RBT stereo film camera, and a Kodak compact digital camera. Andrea is currently president of the Huntsville Photographic Society; a member of the Nature Photography Society (NPS), National Stereoscopic Association (NSA), International Stereoscopic Union (ISU), Potomac Society of Stereo Photographers (PSSP), Atlanta Stereographic Association (ASA), North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA), and National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP); and she is a Kodak Digital Ambassador. Responsibilities have included treasurer and second vice chairman of the PSA Stereo Division; cofounder, chairman, vice chairman, and editor of the PSA Mid-Atlantic Chapter; president, VP-programs, and editor of the Greater Washington Council of Camera Clubs; president, vice president, and editor of the Manassas-Warrenton Camera Club; editor for PSSP; assistant editor for ISU; and PSA stereo exhibition chairman. In 1998 Andrea received the PSA Joseph P. Fallon Award (for new membership work), in 2000 she was honored with the PSA Harold D. Lorimor Award (for leadership in photography) and presented with a PSA Stereo Division Chairman’s Appreciation Award, in 2002 she received her Associate Honor in PSA (APSA), and in 2007 she received the PSA Stuyvesant Peabody Memorial Award (for significant contribution to pictorial photography). She has given many programs and workshops to camera clubs and photography conferences nationwide; and has been published in several magazines (including cover shots). Andrea competes in and judges photography competitions locally and internationally, and has received many top awards. Her interests are mostly nature-oriented, with special interests in macro, flowers, and insects (especially praying mantises). Andrea uses a single DSLR and a macro focusing rail for her stereo macro photography. Other subjects she enjoys are architecture, abstracts, and black light. Andrea currently resides in rural Fayetteville, Tennessee, with her dog and five cats. She is landscaping her farm to create more opportunities for nature photography.

Al Sieg - Al has been a stereophotographer for more than 40 years. He is currently the world's leading exhibitor in stereo photography with more than 2000 pictures accepted for exhibition and is recognized by the Photographic Society of America, Stereo Division as having the highest rank of Master Stereographer XVIII. His stereograms have won more than 400 awards, including numerous Stereo slide of the Year Awards.  He is a member of PSA having received the Honorary PSA and Fellow. He is immediate past President of the Society, a past chairman of the Stereo Division, a member and Fellow of the Third Dimension Society in England, a member of the National Stereoscopic Society and is the Past President of the International Stereoscopic Union, a worldwide organization of stereographers. He is a founding member of the Japan 3D Society. He has presented numerous stereo programs.  Professionally, Al worked for many years with the Eastman Kodak Co., where he held the posts of Corporate Vice President in the US, and President and CEO of Eastman Kodak Japan where he lived and worked for seven years.

George Themelis - George (or DrT as he is better known in the stereoscopic community) discovered stereo photography and joined NSA in 1988. His first stereo camera was a Stereo Realist. In 1997 he helped start the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society (OSPS) in Cleveland. Today George keeps himself busy with a variety of stereo-related activities. He is the Editor of the OSPS newsletter “Stereogram” where he publishes stereo Tutorials every month, repairs stereo cameras and viewers and also buys/sells/trades stereo equipment and supplies for stereo photography (his web site is: www.drt3d.com). He also takes plenty of stereo pictures using slide film and various stereo cameras.

John Waldsmith - John began collecting stereo views in 1971. In the beginning he collected everything 3-D but eventually found that his money and space was limited enough that he had to specialize so he limited his stereo view collection to just views of Ohio by Ohio photographers or publishers.  John is a co-founder of the National Stereoscopic Association and a past vice-president, editor of Stereo World and librarian of the NSA Oliver Wendell Holmes Stereoscopic Research Library. He is also the author of Stereo Views, An Illustrated History and Price Guide. His wife Janet is retired after thirty years of teaching. John is also a licensed and bonded auctioneer and Janet helps him as his clerk and greatest fan.

John Hart - John began stereo photography in 1998 with two 35mm SLR film cameras on a slide bar. When accompanied by several pairs of prime lenses, the rig was cumbersome, slow, and heavy, especially when on canyoneering and climbing expeditions. He soon became immersed in stereoscopic visualizations of scientific experiments with liquids and microscopic crystals. The requisite photographic manipulations are not compatible with film, so around 2003 he started shooting digital 3D. The resulting images are especially suitable for digital 3D projection, which is an exciting way to display stereo photography because several special-effects like zooms, pans, and rotations, as well as animated z-axis movements of multiply-layered objects, can be included in a presentation. Many of his images have been published (mostly as 2D's) in magazines and calendars such as Adventure Sports, Outside, American Canyoneering, Nikon Small World, and on the covers of such journals as Science, Microscopy Today, and Stereo World.

Christopher Schneberger - Christopher Schneberger is an artist in Chicago using stereo photography to create photographic installations. He first began using stereo photography after finding his grandfather's Stereo Realist camera and viewer. In recent years he has used a Sputnik medium format camera and has recently begun using a 3D World medium format camera. He is a member of both NSA and ISU and has attended the conventions of each for the past three years. He teaches photography at Columbia College and the Evanston Art Center. Recent exhibitions include Printworks Gallery, El Camino College, and College for Creative Studies, and his work was recently the cover feature story for PhotoEd magazine's 3D photography issue. He is twice recipient of an Illinois Arts Council individual artist grant, and twice winner of the Paul Wing award for best stereo theater presentation.

Lindel Salow- Lindel Salow began taking stereo pictures in 1994 and became a member of the Detroit Stereographic Society (DSS) that same year. In 2002 Lindel was elected President of the DSS, a post he held until June of 2007. Lindel stepped down from the DSS presidency to serve as Chairman for the 2008 NSA Convention that will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

9:30 AM - Private Screening of the 3D Picture, MONSTER HOUSEJohn Waldsmith has made special arrangements with the Cinemark Theaters and Sony Pictures, to have a private screening of the 3d movie Monster House at the Valley View Cinemark Theater Complex, which is only 1.9 miles from our hotel.  The movie will start at 9:30am and it will be open to the public.  Because of licensing rules, we cannot use theater ticket sales but we will offer seats for the showing on a first come basis, for a $5 donation to help cover our expenses.  Tickets will be available on Saturday May 3rd, as part of the 3d Weekend activities.

As an extra bonus, we will get to tour the projection booth and ask questions about the 3d technology used in the theater.  (Please Note: Cameras or photography is not allowed inside the theater).

This movie has been nominated for an Academy Award (Best Animated Feature) and has received good reviews among 3d enthusiasts.  For example, Ron Labbe in his 3d movie ratings has given this movie 4.5/5 stars, the highest rating of any RealD 3D movie and he writes: "Great! A well done cg film that really shows off the quality of the RealD system. Much more parallax than the previous release (CHICKEN LITTLE) but not so much as to be uncomfortable. Even my wife enjoyed the entire film even though I had to drag her to see it! I saw zero ghosting and the circular polarizer freedom nails this stereo projection system as the best ever for large audiences.  The movie was well written with excellent human cg characters... story lent itself beautifully to the stereo treatments. The script had plenty of laugh out loud jokes for the adults and the visuals were unlike anything seen before in 3D. Sony scored big with this feature..."

Here is a map with driving directions from the hotel (I plan to go for a 2 hour  run along the Towpath Trail on Sunday morning, starting around 7:00 am - You are welcome to join me! We will be back on time for the movie, after a quick shower & breakfast):
