ORION plans and sponsors community education functions including public lectures, activities celebrating man's accomplishments in space exploration, astronomy lectures, astronomical observing sessions, and other cooperative educational events with local groups such as IEEE and Young Astronauts. Our members communicate at biweekly and special meetings (one formal program per month) and research expeditions. We also utilize telephone, amateur radio, and digital (computer) networks, and have developed and built much of our electronics and optical equipment.

Together with local affiliates of national engineering and science societies, such as the American Chemical Society, the American Nuclear Society, the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. ORION participates in the observance of National Engineers' Week, a four day program of technical sessions, workshops, and panel discussions.
