Sam stared at his master, his mouth hanging open.  He couldn’t believe what Frodo was saying.

Frodo shrugged, his tongue flicking out from full pink lips to lick at the green rock candy Gandalf had brought him.  “Sam, I saw what I saw.  Gandalf and Bilbo were in the guest room, and Gandalf’s head was down between…”

Sam covered his ears.  “They couldn’t have been.  Gandalf’s not a hobbit.”

“Just because he’s not a hobbit doesn’t mean they couldn’t.”  Frodo look another slow, deliberate lick of the rock candy.  Pulling out another stick from his pack, he gave it to Sam.  “Here.  Gandalf wanted me to give you the red one.”

Sam held the stick of sweet, red crystals in his hand, staring at the arrangement of sharp edges and ridges.  “It’s too beautiful to eat, sir.”

Frodo leaned in close enough so Sam could smell apples on his breath.  “It’s just candy, Sam.  Go on, take a lick and tell me what you think.”

Sam let his tongue drag along a jagged edge slowly.  He tasted berries and honey and it made him feel giddy.  Sam slid the tip of the candy into his mouth and sucked gently, mumbling.

“What was that?” Frodo said, looking at Sam funny.

Sam took the candy out of his mouth.  “It’s good.  Frodo, were you telling the truth about Gandalf and Bilbo?”

Frodo nodded.  “I was.  In fact, I believe Bilbo loved every second of it.”

Sam laid down on the grass, sliding the candy in and out of his mouth as he stared at the blue sky.  Frodo settled on his stomach, crunching a piece of the green candy with his teeth.

“Sam?”

“Yes, Mr. Frodo?”

“Can I… show you what Gandalf did to Bilbo?”  Frodo’s voice was barely a whisper.

Sam stared at Frodo.  He was nearly as red as his candy.  A strange feeling came over Sam that was better than the taste of rock candy.

Slowly, Sam leaned in for a kiss, mixing the taste of Frodo, apples, and berries.  It was the most delightful thing he’d ever tasted.
