U.S. NAVY & USMC BRASS FLAG TOP: Pole top is made of heavy solid brass, the design symbolic of the traditional naval boarding pike, a nice modern made example of a heavy brass US military halberd type flag top. This is the classic pattern flag top, the design and use of dating back to at least the early 19th century as seen by its use in 1853 by Commodore Perry in his opening to the West visit to Japan. Since 1935 US Navy regulations have specified the halberd top for official use by flag officers other than the CNO.
