2007 AMERICAN CAMELLIA SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING AND CONVENTION

The 2007 American Camellia Society Annual Meeting and Convention was held in Ocala on January 24-28, 2007. More than 135 members registered for the various meetings, events, and banquets. The mood was upbeat, and the new board was installed and held their first meeting. Many of the attendees were able to visit the famous Silver Springs attraction in Ocala. All were able to enjoy the tour of the gardens of Chuck and Bev Ritter in Melrose and Clarence and Lillian Gordy in Ocala.

We were proud to have both the county and city proclaim the week of January 21-28, 2007 "Camellia Week" in both Ocala and Marion County. These proclamations were presented at dinners at the convention by Ocala Mayor Randy Ewers and Marion County Commissioner Andy Kesselring.

Highlights of the banquet included presentations of honors and awards. The Ocala Camellia Society presented two Certificates of Appreciation to local members Clarence and Lillian Gordy and Jim and Esther Smith for their achievements, generosity, and contributions to the culture and enjoyment of camellias. The American Camellia Society presented Clarence Gordy with a plaque honoring him for his contributions to camellia culture and varietal registrations. The ACS Tablet of Honor Award was presented to Annabelle and Lew Fetterman, and to Douglas Deane and Martha Hall. The ACS Fellow Award was presented to Hulyn Smith for his outstanding achievements in the culture and promotion of camellias.
