The great survey from the south of India to Nepal was started in 1806 by one of the predecessors of George Everest (William Lambton).  It lasted several decades.  The world's tallest mountain (now called Mount Everest) was only surveyed in 1852 by Andrew Waugh (the successor of George Everest) who named the peak after George Everest in 1856.  Everest has retired in 1843 and he would be knighted in 1861.  His niece, Mary Everest, married the famous logician George Boole.
