Owyhee is 45.25" and 320 pounds. Maturing at that height despite being his mother's first offspring, Owyhee is a real poster child for the practice of waiting until full physical maturity (at least age four years) before breeding females for the first time.

Owyhee has made it very clear that he wants to work with Gwen -- so much, in fact, that future lessons will have to emphasize working with other people ... as well as not acting up when Gwen doesn't spend what Owyhee thinks is "enough" time with him.

Owyhee was on probation as a stud prospect before we aquired Sky Rocket. If Owyhee and Gwen didn't have a serious "thing" for each other such that we could have chosen to part with him, numerous people would have lept at the chance to add Owyhee to their breeding herds. The choice to geld a stud-quality male like Owyhee is a luxury that can only occur in a highly-successful breeding program. Thanks to good breeding choices on our part in the past, Owyhee can enjoy his life as a carefree gelding and still be a superior packing partner for his friend Gwen, who will also reap the substantial benefits of an improved relationship.

Between obligations, rescue work and Owyhee's somewhat hypersensitive responses to unfamiliar requests, his pack training has been delayed. However, some of his inexplicable instinctive reactions have definitely assisted us in further developing the sensitive and successful Get Connected! training approaches.

Owyhee likes any and all special attention from Gwen, of course. He thinks grain is pretty cool, and also likes to hang out with his best friend Luka.

Owyhee is named after the Owyhee River region, where he would blend in perfectly with the rock formations (particularly in Leslie Gulch). The word is actually a native bastardization of "hawaii," and was applied to the river in reference to two early explorers of the area who were from the Sandwich Islands.
