Creek Ranger Kilchis
ILR # 201955
gelding b. 11-8-98
Ranger Dusty x Hyder Llamas Sahalie
Kilchis is 44" and 290 pounds of power
and energy. Like his sister Olallie,
Kilchis is more interested in just having something to do than
who he does it with, so he's perfectly happy that Jim has eagerly
volunteered to be his human partner.
For quite some time, Kilchis looked like
he might have the complete set of physical, behavioral, and coat
characteristics that comprise "stud quality." However,
although Kilchis did fantastically on the trail with heavy loads
and average terrain, his mother's bugaboo -- significant hills,
even with average weight -- proved his undoing. When we discovered
Kilchis had acquired a lax patella, we then knew that maternal
half-brother Jack's
and sister Olallie's
patella problems weren't just trauma-induced -- they had to have
a genetic component, and Kilchis needed to leave the gene pool.
Even though Kilchis would be a solid packer
for most commercial llama outfitters and about 50% of recreactional
llama packers, our goal is to consistently produce pack llamas
who would be prized by anyone (including us!), performing without
trouble no matter what the packing style, terrain, or climate,
and with minimal conditioning -- just like Ranger
Dusty and Sky
Rocket, Adding to the oversupply of average llamas isn't
what we're about (nor do we consider it ethical). So, in late
2003, Kilchis finally got to be a happier gelding instead of
a frustrated young wanna-be stud. Now that his pasturemates [translation
-- former random battering targets] have had some time to recognize
Kilchis has changed, they're much happier, too.
Kilchis is available as a companion, show
prospect, and not more than a limited duty packer. His price
is $450. Because Kilchis is not being sold as a pack llama, his
price does not include a pack saddle.
The original Kilchis was the head of a
Killamook (Tillamook) Indian band along the northwest Oregon
coast when the white settlers arrived. Kilchis was markedly tall
and dark, and there is still dispute over whether he was part
or entirely negro. He was described as "strong as three
men and intelligent as ten," and was known to be fair, just,
and peaceful in his dealings with his own people and with the
whites.
