Gertrude's Flower Garden Weekly Diary

5/28/99 - The volunteers are coming! No, nothing to do with the military, but important to Gertrude's Flower Garden. This week I have been especially careful in trimming, edging, and cultivating the flower beds, because tiny seedlings are coming up everywhere.

When we first began gathering and planting flower seeds, we saved everything we could, but we found that, in many cases, nature had done a better job than we did. We began to find celosia, coleus, balsam, cleome, impatiens, and many other plants in our flower beds that were as well developed as the ones grown in our basement. These I simply needed to move where I wanted them.

To get nature's free flower plants there are a few things you must do. First, you must not mulch your beds heavily where you might expect seeds to come up. Secondly, you must cultivate very carefully or not at all in early spring. Finally, you must learn to recognize your little volunteers when they come up and not pull them up for weeds. Good luck--it's fun!

The picture shows where we placed the "Welcome" sign on the north side of our house, looking toward our back garden.
