Misuse and Waste of Taxpayer Money / PTIA's True Intentions

The 1999 FAA data on Air Traffic Activity at PTIA for ALL types of aircraft reveals that PTIA is operating at only 25% of possible usage (capacity).  The breakdown is as follows:

Type of Aircraft  Flights per Day (average)
Air Carriers
(60+ passengers or 18,000 lbs. + cargo)
57  (31.4% of total)
Air Taxis
(less than 18,000 lbs. payload)
37  (20% of total)
General Aviation
(civil aircraft that is not Air Carriers or Air Taxis)
69.8  (38.2% of total)
Local
(within 20 mile radius of airport: e.g. students, pleasure riders.)
17.6  (9.6% of total)
Military 0.6  (0.3% of total)

By contrast, LaGuardia, which has a similar two perpendicular runway configuration as PTIA, is operating at 93% of capacity.  (To see flight operations--landings and departures--at different airports, go to www.apo.data.faa.gov/ and select "Air Traffic," then "Towers," then "Air Traffic Activity.")  LaGuardia is closed to all but emergency traffic between 12:00 Midnight and 6:00 AM in consideration of nearby neighbors, so can handle 540 flights per day (30 flights an hour x 18 hours).  PTIA is open 24 hours per day so is capable of handling 720 flights per day (30 flights x 24 hours).

If 60 FedEx flights were added per night at PTIA, PTIA's utilization would increase to only 33.7%.  If a third runway is built, utilization would then drop to 22.5%.  Why, then, does the PTI Airport insist it needs your taxpayer money to build a third runway when adding 60 FedEx flights per day will increase utitilization to only 33.7% on the existing two runways??  What does PTIA intend to do with the other 66% of capacity?  Or, if a third runway is added, the other 78% of capacity?  A GLOBAL TRANSPARK, perhaps?

?Did anyone ask YOU if you want your city, your county to become a Global TransPark?  The quality of life for all people in Guilford County will be negatively affected in many ways if this happens.  LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!  Write or call your local, state, and federal elected representatives!  They are responsible to you!  (The PQLC would appreciate a copy of your letters.)
