First time my husband and I saw Nancy was the summer after my daughter took her in as a foster child. My husband and I were living in Texas and had come up for most of the summer. Nancy went right along with the other children calling us Grammy and Grampy. From then on we were Grammy and Grampy to her whenever we visited or called. I guess we were the first grandparents she ever had that she knew of.
When daughter and her family were living in Colorado, we went to visit and my husband had a heart attack. Upon leaving the hospital, Nancy insisted he use her bed and bedroom until he recuperated. Also in Colorado, Nancy was very sad one day. She said the kids in school were making fun of her because she was adopted. I told her to go and tell those kids their parents had to take them whether the parents wanted them or not, when they were born. And that her parents loved her so much that they chose her. She was really a wanted child. That made Nancy feel a lot better. She hadn't thought of it that way before.
I sent her money for her birthday in Arizona. When she thanked me for it, she said she had spent the money on getting her sneakers fixed. I couldn't imagine why anyone would get a pair of sneakers fixed. And then I found out Sneakers was her cat.
After my husband died, I continued to visit twice a year, a month at a time. In that way I watched Nancy grow.
Nancy loved stuffed animals. And I now have 2 of them in my living room.
