A fully intact 1960's installation of green Marbelite signals was recently replaced in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township. I took pictures of the signals in 2004 or 2005, with the gut feeling that their days were numbered. Now that they're gone, I wish I had taken one or two more snaps.

The subject of this page stood at the corner of Shunpike Road and Southern Boulevard in Chatham for about 35 years. The less-developed area on the southwest side of the map is the beginning of the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge. |

Approaching the intersection eastbound on Shunpike...this is a classic New Jersey sight!

I love the faded green finish on many Marbelites. It is becoming quite a rare sight nowadays. |

This is the only side-mounted head in the installation. It appears that the upper clamp had come loose. |

Also somewhat typical of New Jersey, this signal had pedestrian buttons, but no pedestrian signals. The button would merely hasten the change to the next phase. I'm not convinced these worked that often. |
