GE made a stamped-aluminum traffic signal during the 1950's which is instantly recognizable for its streamlined shape. These signals have the look of three balls stacked or laid side by side. They were sprinkled in across much of New Jersey, back in the day, and now there seem to be just a handfull around.

This signal is safely nestled in the quiet suburbia of Chatham, Morris County, at the corner of Washington and Wathcung Avenues. One pair has been replaced with yellow poly heads (bleh!). |

Looking North on Watchung Avenue... The side-mounted signal is an old Marbelite, facing the wrong way down a one-way street. I suppose it's there as a pedestrian signal (or for motorists going the wrong way on Washington?). |

A fully intact installation of streamlined GE's still operates here in downtown Ridgewood, Bergen County. Since this picture was taken in 2003, the signals have been repainted in yellow, the controller has been replaced, and LED pedestrian signals have been added. |
