Example: A "true" HOT image

sRGB display of HOT image.

This image was obtained by Steve Lee of the Anglo-Australian Observatory, using filters that matched the H-alpha, O-III, and B primaries of the HOT color space. He balanced the image to make a pleasing display on a CRT.

HOT rendering (simulated)

If we interpret this image using HOT primaries and display it (as best we can with a CRT monitor) we see that the hydrogen emission lines are a significant visual component of this object (NGC2070). The Oxygen-3 regions are also better defined and show in their distinctive blue-green color.

Images like this are difficult to obtain, but the effort can result in a visually significant and pleasing rendition of deep sky scenes.
