Campus O Information

Join us as we unveil The University of Akron campus orienteering map at
a short-course ("sprint") event Saturday March 28!  Registration from 11-2,
with starts 11-3. The University of Akron campus is finishing a massive
makeover, with extensive new construction and landscaping. The campus is
cheerier, greener, and more exciting to visit than ever. Even if you've
been here before, it will be new terrain for you!
The navigation will be very different than at our other meets, since it
is on a college campus with no woods but lots of navigational obstacles.
There will be three courses: a beginner course of about 1.3km, and two more
advanced courses of about 2.5 and 3.5km each. Times will be fast:  Expect
the winners to have times of 15-20 minutes on each course, and even a few
seconds might affect your results.  The campus environment will put a
premium on fast route choice and quick navigation, and will exercise new
skills for all of us.

The event center, starts, and finishes will be at the new Student Health
and Wellness building (the Gym), adjacent to the Ocasek Natatorium.
Directions are pasted below.

Free parking is available in lots 2, 13, 8 and 10, all within an easy
walk of the event center. These are 'permit only' lots, but you'll be ok if
you park legally there - tickets will only be issued for expired meters,
fire lanes and handicap violations). The Recreation Center has a snackbar,
and the nearby student union offers a wide variety of eating options, and
even a Starbucks, bowling alley, and game room, so there are unusual
amenities available at this event.  This is a great chance to try a
completely new type of orienteering. It will never replace a day in the
woods, but it might help expand your horizons and improve your skills.
Jointly sponsored by the University of Akron's Outdoor Recreation program,
and NEOOC.
Event Director and Course Designer: Randy Mitchell
Registrar: Greg Harpst
Timer: Caitlin Harpst
Note: we are obviously hoping to attract University of Akron students to
this event to lure them into the woods for our normal meets.  Please be
alert for opportunities to be good ambassadors for orienteering! Help
novices figure out the compass, read the map, understand timing and starts,
punch the card, and generally explain what the sport is about.
