The Phantom Tollbooth
                                      by Norman Juster

The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norman Juster,  has characters whose names usually have more than one meaning.  (That is known as a double entendre, French for meaning.)  The main character, Milo, goes through the novel meeting many characters, entering this world of multiple meanings through a phantom tollbooth.   The students of Astre 5 came up with their own characters who have their own stories but who would fit right into this humorous book.   They (the characters, of course) would love to be considered for sequel (or a prequel) to Norman Juster's novel.  Here are some of them, with illustrations of how they might look.  We meet each one as part of a chapter inserted in the book, as Milo continues his travels.

New Characters for The Phantom Tollbooth

The from the land of Saurus by Jeffrey

The is from the land of Sauras. He lives in Dictionopolis. A very old man, his role is that of knowing all the words in the worlds.  He knows how to match all of the words that have the same meaning.  He comes into the story when Milo is in jail. When The meets Milo he tells him his long story of how he got there.   It seems that King Azaz had asked for words that had the same meaning as other words.   King Azaz expected to hear "smart and intelligent" but instead was told numbers were very much like words.   King Azaz was furious and The was thrown  in jail.   When Milo is finishes listening to the story he is curious about how The was found guilty.  Milo asks about The's  guilt and The, from the land of Sauras, uses the words "wrongful" and "burden" along with many others.   Milo decides to leave, but as he does, he bumps into The who tells him how to exit (using synonyms, of course.

       Meet Mr. Tailor by Dominik

Mr. Tailor is a character with one tail and lots of tales to tell. He has a magic needle so he can sew the Mathemagician’s numbers together and make new ones.  Mr. Tailor tells tales to the Mathemagician before the Mathemagician goes to sleep.  Mr. Tailor sleeps, eats, and works in a hidden room in the Mathemagician’s mine.  Mr. Tailor happily receives numbers every day from the workers in the mine and follows the Mathemagician’s orders.  Mr. Tailor met the Mathemagician one day when he was wandering in the mine with Milo, Tock, and The Humbug.  Mr. Tailor was looking a job as a tailor.  The Mathemagician was taking his daily walk in his mine and he saw Mr. Tailor.   He asked Mr. Tailor what was he doing there. Mr. Tailor told the Mathemagician that he was looking for a job as a tailor.  The Mathemagician answered that he would only give him a job if he knew how to tell tales.  Mr. Tailor then asked if he could have a job in which he could also sew.  The Mathemagician agreed and gave Mr. Tailor a magic needle so he could sew his numbers together and make new ones.  The Mathemagician also told Mr. Tailor to tell him a tale every night before he went to sleep.  It has been that way since.

Mr. Average  by Andrea

The name of the character that I would place in The Phantom Tollbooth is Mr. Average.  This character is an average height, weight and even has an average IQ.  He lives in a land where everything that you do involves math.  Mr. Average  lives with his wife Quotient and his son Sum. He meets Milo in chapter 21 called “Mr. Average and the Problem with Sum”.  In this chapter Mr. Average's son, Sum, is having a math test at school. He thinks that the first 10 questions are easy because they are all addition.  When he got to the second part of the test he finds out that he doesn't know how to find the average of the numbers.  This character would fit into The Phantom Tollbooth because he has a name with a double meaning.  Mr. Average would be one of Milo’s friends.  The conclusion to this chapter is that Mr. Average and Milo teach Sum how to find the average of a set of numbers.

Dr. Sterile* from the Land of Rebirth By Nidhi

Dr. Sterile from the land of Rebirth sells dictionaries in Dictionopolis.
While Milo was roaming the “Word Market” Milo saw a booth called “Dictionaries sold here”. Milo wanted to take a look.  When he saw a weird looking plant behind the booth he asked the plant ( although he thought it was crazy), “Are you the one selling dictionaries?” To Milo’s surprise the plant answered, “Yes”.      "May I see one?" Milo asked. “Surely” the plant answered.
“By the way, I'm Milo. What's your name?" inquired Milo.
"Mine is Dr. Sterile.  What letter would you like?"
Milo looked confused. “I thought that almost all the words come in one dictionary.”
“In your world perhaps, but here you pick a letter and you look up a word starting with that letter. That gives birth to new words.”
“Umm, let's see.  I would like the letter M.  I want to see if my name is there,” Milo said. When Dr. Sterile gave Milo the dictionary Milo could not find his name in it so he gave the dictionary back and went off to see another booth.

   Komplexiona  by Elizabeth

While Milo was at the Colorful Symphony he noticed a giant mural of a rainbow. He walked over to it and the mural looked like it was moving. Then Milo thought to himself,  "Who made this  beautiful mural?"
"Me," said a voice. Suddenly beautiful young lady appeared.
 "Who are you?" asked Milo.
"I am Komplexiona S. Hue,"  the young lady replied. "And the finest artist."
"Do you like the symphony?" asked Milo.
"Like them?" asked Komplexiona.  "I love them!  They gave me a job.  I test to see if they are on the right pitch and have the right color."
 "How?" asked Milo.
"I paint the most colorful picture," said Komplexiona. "If it moves the symphony is fine. Because of the visual vibration the mural kind of shakes.  To get the best color you need a visual vibration.
"So the orchestra is on the right pitch."  said Milo
"Exactly,"  said Komplexiona.  "They are doing fine today."
Milo nodded and then said, "I have to go. My friends are leaving."
"Will I see you often?"  asked Komplexiona.
"I'll most likely be seeing you a lot."  said Milo.
 "Great,"  said Komplexiona.  "Good-bye."

Art  by Adam

As Milo walked down the street he remembered what the alphabet letter said.   “You'll find a way to reach [Princesses] Rhyme and Reason  by yourself.”  He wondered how to get to where they were.  He tried to picture himself there. When he opened his eyes he was surrounded by people in his car.  He knew all the people around him except for the one who dressed like an artist.  Milo asked the artist his name.  It was Art and he came from Drawing,  a land Milo had never visited. Whatever Art drew happened. After he drew the afternoon sky he sat down, took out a small piece of paper, and drew an ice cream cone.  An ice cream cone appeared.  Milo sat down with Art and began a conversation.  By the end of their chat, Milo figured out that Art had to draw what happened.   Art asked Milo if there was anything he would like.  Milo said he would very much like a dog, which Art then drew.  As soon as he finished the drawing, a dog appeared.  It was getting late so Milo said good-bye and headed.  An excited Milo returned home only to discover that the dog was now just a picture.

Inter Net created by Giacomo

In the Kingdom  of  Dictionopolis lives a wizard.   His name is Inter Net.  He can predict the future and can see all of Dictionopolis in his web browser. He meets Milo, Tock and the Humbug in the Foothills of Confusion.   What is he is doing in the Foothills of Confusion?  He is      downloading and installing, of course.  Milo and the others are puzzled by this answer and have no idea what Inter Net means.   They ask where he lives to which he replies, "Dictionopolis".   The three visitors want to know why he is there.    "The king does not want to come to the Foothills of Confusion so I'm installing software so he can view everything through my web browser,"  answers Inter Net.  Milo and the others were still confused which Inter Net observes.  "Oh never mind" said Inter Net as he continued his work.   As the others started to leave the Foothills of Confusion Inter Net had a change of heart and decided to explain what he was doing.  It took a while but they finally understood.  It seems that the Foothills of Confusion had confused them.  Milo, Tock, and Humbug continued on their way.  When they got to the Kingdom of Dictionopolis the king used the web browser to see everything he wanted.   The king was very pleased.

  1A   by Kristin

1A was both letter and number.  He was kicked out of Digitopolis and Dictionopolis.  He looked rather strange; after all he was part letter and part number.

Milo found 1A in the Foothills of Confusion.  “Why are you here?” asked Milo.  “I am here because when Rhyme and Reason were banished I was kicked out by both kings.  That is because I am both letter and number,” said 1A.

“How did you become both letter and number?” asked Milo.

“I became this way because, when there were both letters and numbers, my parents met.  My mother was the number 1 and Dad was the letter A,” said 1A.

Suddenly 1A began to cry and said, “I have been stuck in the Foothills of Confusion for some time now.  I stay here all alone.”

1. Stay calm
2. Speak correctly and kindly

Mathomatic by Colin

My new character is Mathomatic; he lives in Digitopolis.  He is a multiplication sign and lives at the end of Digitopolis in a large automatic car dealer's house. His job is to drive people and other animals from Digitopolis to The Valley of Sound. He drives the characters in a large jeep that is in the shape of a division sign.
In the story Milo doesn't go the original way  he visits the Valley of Sound. He decides to go to Mathomatic for a ride to the Valley Of Sound.  When Milo asks him for a ride to the valley Mathomatic says, “Yes, that will be $25.00 please.” Milo pays him and are off to the Valley of Sound. When they arrive Milo thanks Mathomatic, gives him a tip for a ride in a clean jeep, and goes on his way.  Mathomatic heads back to Digitopolis for his next customer.

The Kid by Aaron
My character is The Kid and he is a baby goat.  His dream is to meet the King of Dictionopolis.

As Milo proceeded to the Tollbooth, he saw a goat standing in front of the Tollbooth. Milo said, "Hi," and the goat responded, "Hello. My name is Kid." "How did you get the name, Kid?" asked Milo.
"Another name for a little goat is kid," said Kid.
Milo said, "My name is Milo.  How much is the toll?"
Kid responded, "Oh, I am not in charge of the toll. I'm just looking for a ride."  "Where are you headed?" asked Milo.
"I've always dreamed of going to Dictionopolis," said Kid.
"I'm going there. Hop in," said Milo.
"Thank you," said Kid.
Milo drove and drove, and finally saw a sign that said "1 mile to Dictionopolis". The Kid started jumping with excitement.  Finally they came to Dictionopolis.  Kid rushed to the king's palace. Luckily no guards were at the entrance.  Kid was so happy to finally be in Dictionopolis, but even happier to be in the King's palace.  It was beautiful. The Kid and Milo walked up to the King seated on his throne and introduced themselves. The King was wondering how they got in but decided not to ask. The king treated them to any food they wished to have, and during dinner the king told them about Rhyme and Reason. (They had been banished from the kingdom.) Milo decided he would have to leave in order to rescue Rhyme and Reason, but Kid did not want to leave.  The King let Kid stay while Milo left.  It was time for Milo to do something useful (while still having fun).

Mr. Conit by Maxine

Mr. Conit is my character that I introduced to The Phantom Tollbooth.  Mr. Conit is from the land of “Shapes”.  Mr.Conit works in an ice-cream shop; in that shop they only sell ice-cream in a cone.  Mr.Conit works in the ice-cream shop that is right next to the Market Place.  In the ice-cream shop the chocolate ice-cream is shaped like a “C”, the vanilla ice-cream is shaped like a “V”, and the strawberry ice-cream is shaped like an “S”, and so on.
As Milo walked around the Market Place he spotted an ice-cream shop.  Milo and Tock entered the ice-cream shop.  Mr.Conit welcomed Milo and Tock to the ice-cream shop.  There were cones of chocolate ice-cream, cones of strawberry ice-cream, and lots of other flavors.  Milo asked Mr.Conit if they had any ice-cream in cups, or pints or quarts, but Mr.Conit said, “No, only cones.”  Mr.Conit offered Milo a cone of chocolate chip, or a cone of vanilla, but Milo said “No thank you, we're only here to look.”  Mr.Conit asked, “Are you sure you don’t want any cookie dough, or rocky road?”
“No thanks,” said Milo, “I’m sure.”  Milo asked what land Mr.Conit was from.  Mr.Conit answered, “ The land of Shapes.”  Milo and Tock left the shop, and went on to their next journey.

The Shiner Fairy Bug by Susan

While the three companions of The Phantom Tollbooth went up the Mountain of Ignorance with the demons chasing after them, they were stopped by the Sense Talker who was also a demon.  They were able to get past him only to encounter  the Shiner Fairy Bug who appeared out of nowhere and started flying up to the Castle in the Air.  Not knowing who the Fairy Bug was, they chased unsuccessfully after the flying bug with great speed.    Tired and sore, the three companions made it to the Castle in the Air.  To their surprise, the little Shiner Fairy Bug was right there in the entrance, sweeping the floor!  It was a beautiful creature with rainbow wings, golden hair, and sweet, pink lips.  She was wearing a snowy white dress that was perfect on her.  Looking at the visitors, she went over to tidy all of them up.  Then she beckoned them to follow her to the castle.   As they entered, all of the companions noticed that she was a little shorter than Milo and had the most graceful posture they have ever seen.  When they almost reached the inside of the castle, Shiner Fairy Bug called out, “Princesses Reason and Rhyme, we have guests today.”  She then made the guests comfortable by seating them in sofas and chairs.  Princesses Rhyme and Reason entered and had a pleasant chat with the three.  While they were all talking, Shiner Fairy Bug peered outside the castle and saw that all the demons were very close.  The princesses were warned in time to escape with the help of Tock, the watchdog.  All of them made it to Dictionopolis and lived happily ever after.  They couldn't have done it without the Shiner Fairy Bug.   She rescued them and was a hero.

Mrs. Contortionist by Michaela

In the Kingdom of Dictionoplis there is a Mrs. Contortionist. She talks through her movements.  Mrs.Contortionist has a favorite game; it is charades.  Her job is to help the spelling bee remember all his letters and words. The only problem is she can't talk. She lives in a small hut made out of twigs and bark. Mrs.Contortionist is very clumsy so she bumps in to Milo on her way to work. Milo tips over the plate of letters and words startling him and making him jump because the letters and words are alive.  Milo picks up the yelling plate and puts the delicious words and letters back.  Mrs.Contortionist apologizes and offers them a ride on her stomach. (Her hands serve as feet, too.)
They walk in silence until they meet the spelling bee who asks why are are getting this ride.  Mrs. Contortionist makes a sign and indicating that Milo, Tock and Humbug had bumped into her earlier.  She signals that she is taking all three   to the market place to meet Rhyme, Reason, the two kings and Faintly Macabre to see them once again do their jobs.

New Words Dic fromTionary by Alex

The New, The Great 100,000 New Words Dic from the kingdom of Tionary! This character can define and knows 100,000 words better than any human.  This character can teach Milo new words and meanings on his way to his house.  Dic loves to teach his brother Thes from the land of Saurus new words and meanings, but he would rather teach Milo because Milo is kinder and can understand more words than his brother.  Dic can outsmart anybody besides Tock "Ahhhha! You See Dic run!"  shouts Milo.  Tock chases Dic because he is insulted .  Dic thinks Tock wouldn't understand what he says Dic is wrong.    Now Dic is running for his life with Tock close behind.   It all started back at the tollbooth when Tock growled at Dic for teaching Milo new words.  Milo and Dic jump back into the tollbooth where it's safe.  ...And that's what happens when Dic insults Tock.

The character's name is "The *Rabelaisian *Vice" which is how he introduces himself to Milo, Tock and the Humbug.  He tells them to call him "Silly Willy" for short.  He is a demon whose power is to make anyone laugh.  Milo, Tock and the Humbug wind up laughing for three days (nonstop).  They do not realize how much time has passed until after they have stopped laughing.  Silly Willy has suddenly disappeared.   Once they realize that Silly Willy changed his ways and is   now a good character, they asked him to join them on their journey.  Silly Willy stays with them till the end of their trip and decides to live with Rhyme and Reason and become their apprentice.

Dr.Dynamo wondered why was this boy di not have a weird name didn't look weird. Perhaps he needed a checkup. Sinister- evil and cruel

     Run Hopkins by Attaul

Once Milo had gone through the tollbooth the tollbooth had to go to someone else. Those were the rules, and so the tollbooth went to a boy named Run Hopkins.   Run's family thought he was energetic but in reality he was as lazy as a rock (if rock's can be lazy, that is).   When his mom would ask him to take out the garbage, he would just say,  “Ma, there is nuttin’ to do, and I’m not about to get up from wasting my time and take out the trash.”  (Run could not even think of anything that would stop him from wasting his time.)
“Oh Run you make me so angry!” cried his mom.
By the way, Run Hopkins is Milo’s cousin who was born and raised in Florida he lives in Florida.  He lives with both his mom and dad.  Milo has visited Run a few times.  They are the best of friends, speak to one another on the phone, and they chat on the Internet.
One day, during summer vacation, Run was dawdling when a box out of nowhere silently appeared in his room.   Run didn't notice it at first. so at 8:00, as usual, Run went to sleep.  In the morning when Run woke up he walked around his room just wasting time when he noticed the box.

“What's this?" he asked himself.  "I’ll look inside after I've had breakfast.”  At the table he soon learned that Milo was coming to stay for three weeks. His mom told him that Milo would be here in one hour and he was to take a shower, brush his teeth, and  change his clothes.

“Oh yeah, Milo is coming over,” said Run as he did a little victory dance around the room. “I won't open that box until he gets here,” and he ran toward the bathroom to take a shower.

"Run is  taking a shower. I must be dreaming,” said Run's mom.

 “No, you're not, ” said Run's dad.

An hour later Milo arrived from the airport.  By then Run had done everything his mom had asked.
“Hi Milo,” said Run.  “I found a very large package today.  It appears to be a tollbooth.”
“It's back,” said a delighted Milo.
    “What?”
“The Phantom Tollbooth.  It has returned.  Now we can travel together.” Run and Milo began to make plans.

Dr. Y by Saieed

Dr.Y is just the most curious person in Dictionopolis. Dr.Y is just right for his name because he is shaped like a letter Y. He (if we can refer to a letter as ‘he’) lives in a little question mark shaped house in Dictionopolis. Dr.Y comes from the land of Curi in the town of Osity. He is encountered by Milo, Tock and the Humbug when they drive right into his little house in their quest for Rhyme and Reason.  They ask Y, “Where is Dictionopolis?”    Y replies, “I don't know why I ask why,” instead of answering their question and invites the three of them in for tea.   “Why are you here?” he wants to know.
“We are on a quest for Rhyme and Reason,” replies Milo. “We are going to bring them back,” adds the Humbug.
“Oh, you mean the two beautiful princesses. Why? But good luck,” says Dr. Y.     Milo and the group bid Y good-bye and continued their journey.

   Dic of Tionary   by Ilya

Dic is from the land of Tionary and now lives in Dictionopolis.  He   is a grumpy old man who has learned many many words in his lifetime and can define all of them.  He fits in novel, The Phantom Tollbooth, because he loves words and is one of the people who grows words on his trees and sells them.  All of his words are words that are sad and lonely.  If Dic wasn't so lonely and grumpy his words would be happy and kind. He appears in Chapter 21.

Chapter 21    Milo Returns

After Milo returned home from saving Princesses Rhyme and Reason he had a dream that he went to Dictionopolis.  In Dictionopolis Milo met a a grumpy old man named Dic. Dic was always lonely because he was always mean to everybody.  When he met Milo he wasn't so grumpy anymore. In fact he was happy.  All of the people in Dictionopolis began to like Dic and he was never lonely again.  As for Milo, he had to wake up from his dream (and his trip to Dictionopolis) because he had to clean his room.

Dr. Back N. Forth by Victoria

Dr. Back N. Forth
This doctor specializes in confusion, making people not know whether to read things backwards or forwards.  He gives them a sentence to read but one doesn't know whether it should be read backwards or forwards. Dr. Back N. Forth doesn't tell them is that the sentence is a palindrome. "A man a plan a canal Panama" written backwards gives you the same letters: amanaplanacanalPanama.   Milo meets this character in the Foothills of Confusion. Milo is confused by this palindrome, but with the help of the Humbug and Tock, he solves the riddle.  Milo tells Dr. Back N. Forth, “The correct answer is both backwards and forwards, for the sentence is a palindrome.” The doctor was dumbfounded.  Nobody has ever solved his riddle before.  Tock suggests that Milo offer Dr. Back N. Forth the following riddle,  “This watchdog's name is Tock, but yet he ticks. Why is this so?” Milo, Tock and the Humbub take pity on the doctor (for he knows only verbal riddles) and Milo solves the riddle.   Milo explains to Dr. Back N. Forth, “This dog has a brother.  His brother was named Tick for the sound his parents thought he would surely make. He instead sounded a tocktocktock. His parents rushed to the Hall of Records to change the name, but they were too late. When Tock was born they thought he would make the same noise as his brother. They were wrong. Now Tock and his brother are forever burdened with the wrong names."
Milo, Tock, and the Humbug bid Dr. Back N. Forth farewell and continued on their journey.

     Nurse Melody by Melissa
Nurse Melody lives in Silent Valley.  She is from the land of Harmony.  She works in a hospital across the street from her house.  In the hospital she makes pleasant sounds and gives people their prescriptions of pleasant sounds.  The hospital is called Pleasant Sound Hospital.

Nurse Melody and Pleasant Hospital

As Milo and the Humbug were talking, Tock spotted a building.  He read aloud its name, "Pleasant Sound Hospital", to Milo who drove the car into the hospital parking lot.  They all got out of the car and went into the hospital.  Milo saw a sign that said, "Please ring bell and wait patiently" so he rang the bell and a pleasant ocean sound came out.  A minute or two later Nurse Melody came out.   In her hand was a bottle that said, "Blue Jays singing".  She put the bottle down and introduced herself to Milo, Tock, and the Humbug.
"What kind of hospital is this? It has no people," said Milo.
"It's a pleasant sound hospital," said Nurse Melody.
"Why do you make pleasant sounds only?" asked Tock.
"I love peasant sounds , not awful ones," Nurse Melody replied.  Milo told Nurse Melody that they were on a journey to rescue Rhyme and Reason.  She gave them a box full of pleasant sounds and said, "I wish you good luck on your journey and hope you reach your destination."  They waved good-bye and  continued on their way.

     Mr. Data  by Marilyn
The character I have created is called Mr. Data.  His role is to help Milo, the Humbug, and Tock find their way when they get lost on the Science Route.   Mr. Data will take Milo, the Humbug, and Tock to Reality and Disappear.   Milo thinks Mr. Data looks odd. He is short and fat and has long dark hair growing upward. He wears a bright colored shirt with the Daily News all over it.  Every word he says is true he always holds a thesaurus in his hand.  Mr. Data makes his first appearance in Chapter 10.

  Mrs. Peri Meter by Carissa
Meet my character, Ms. Peri  Meter.  She is an old lady who was once  a math teacher.   Her favorite subjects in math are perimeter, diameter, and circumference.  She knows everything about those!  One day Milo has a little trouble finding the circumference of a tree trunk.  Ms. Peri Meter offers help which Milo accepts.  The two become best friends.  From that day on, Milo and Peri Meter go everywhere together and whenever Milo needs help with math, Ms. Peri Meter is more than happy to help him.
But one day even Ms. Peri Meter has trouble in math! She isn't able to find the diameter of something.  Milo use branches and twigs to help Peri Meter and they find the solution! They are thrilled and Ms. Peri Meter is back on her mathematics track.

Copy-Cat by Jon Claude

This is Copy-Cat.  She roams around and copies anything or anyone.  She'll copy whatever people are carrying, money, boxes of [alphabet] letters, or bags of items that are bought.    She makes lots of friends in markets because she flatters people by copying their appearance.  Copy-Cat has always wanted to meet Rhyme and Reason, and so, when she meets Milo at the castle, she decides to help Milo find his way.
They come to a door that is locked. Copy-Cat, who is able to copy anyone or anything, turns into a key and opens the door.  Inside it is dark and the room is filled with demons.  Copy-Cat turns herself into a hallway that leads to where Rhyme and Reason are held prisoners.  With the help of Copy-Cat, Milo is able to reach save both Rhyme and Reason.  Copy-Cat turns back into her own self and says farewell to Milo and the princesses.

   Meet Dr. Illusion by Leigh

After leaving Digitopolis, Milo cuts through the Foothills of Confusion and is on his way home.  As he is passing through he spots a flier stapled to a tree that reads, “Lanterns for Rent.  These special lanterns see through illusions and will help you on your way.  Just simply point the lantern towards what you see and you will know if it's an illusion."  The bottom of the flier tells where the lanterns are sold.   When Milo sees a store offering the lanterns, he runs excitedly towards the building.  The one store turns into eight stores. Milo realizes that this has to be an illusion.  Milo's problem is that he cannot decide which shop is real and he falls after bumping into one of the illusions.
The owner of the shop peers outside his window and sees a very confused Milo looking in every direction.  Right away the owner runs outside to help Milo, turning on the lantern, making the illusion disappear.  He quickly introduces himself as Dr. Illusion.  As the man helps Milo up Milo asks to buy a lantern.  Dr. Illusion is happy to do so, and Milo (holding the lantern that makes illusions disappear) goes on his way.

  Dr. Car Nivore by Kinza

If I could create a character for “The Phantom Tollbooth”, I would create a character by the name of Dr. Car from Nivore.  Nivore is located nearby the Market Place.  Dr. Car has a car and a weird horse.  Milo finds himself in the land of Nivore because he has angered the Humbug.  The Humbug  glues Milo to his gigantic spoon and then jumps on the other end sending Milo flying. Milo lands in Nivore on a soft pillow that magically appears.   The pillow has come from Dr. Car's wand.  Milo thanks him but realizes he has a stomach ache.   Dr. Car cures Milo’s stomach ache.  It's on to the Market Place  where Milo meets Officer Shrift.

  Backscratcher by Michelle

One day Milo came home from school and saw that the tollbooth was back in his room. He quickly grabbed some coins and chose where he wanted to go to. When he got there, Tock was waiting for him. Tock said, “Rhyme and Reason want to see you.”  Milo agreed that he and Tock would go to the Castle of Wisdom so Milo drove to the Castle of Wisdom. There, Rhyme told Milo that their pet, Backscratcher, was stolen by the demons. Then Reason told Milo that three days after the theft, Backscracher attacked the castle.  Milo said, “I'm going to he get Backscratcher back.”  Milo thought it took a day to get to the Mountain of Ignorance. A few minutes after getting there Dynne appeared and asked Milo why was he back. After Milo told Dynne why he was back Dynne said “I would like to help you.”  Off Tock, Milo and Dynne went to find Backscratcher.  Out of nowhere demons suddenly appeared. One demon was holding a small creature. The small creature was light blue and its eyes were full of sadness. “My name is Backscracher,” said the creature in a soft voice. “Give back Backscratcher” Milo cried angrily to the demons. Dynne ran up the mountain to help but was hurt by the demons.  Milo grabbed Backscratcher from the demons and made his escape. The king of all the demons pounded his fist in anger.  Milo returned Backscratcher to Rhyme and Reason.  Milo returned home to get a map which he would need to continue the journey through the tollbooth.  Milo fell asleep. When he awoke the tollbooth was still there but he noticed a bag on his bed. On the bag there was a note it said, "Dear Milo,
Here is a gift for you."  It was signed "Rhyme and Reason".
Milo kept Backscratcher with him wherever he went from that day on.

Fiddle N. Riddlemen by Charles

This new character, Fiddle N. Riddlemen owns a business on one of the Foothills of Confusion. The N. stands for nonsense.  He has a hut called "Puzzles Galore!" with aisles of sacks with socks holding puzzles that Mr. Riddlemen made himself.  The factory next to the hut is called "The Hackensack Sock N Sack Company."
Riddlemen's business is not doing well.   Since Rhyme and Reason have been gone, no one wants to be challenged by his puzzles.  He tries to advertise but gets lost in the Foothills of Confusion.
Milo sees Riddlemen on his way to Dictionopolis and asks Tock, "Who is that?"  Tock explains that it is Mr. Riddlemen and that he is lost. Riddlemen spots them and gives them each a complimentary sack hoping they will help the business. As they drive away, Riddlemen's Crystal Ball reacts and shows that Milo, Tock, and The Humbug will save Rhyme and Reason. He sighs in a relaxed way.

The Math Apprentice  by Zakaria

The character I have created is the Math Apprentice. The Math Apprentice lives in a palace in Digitopolis. He is second in command of Digitopolis after the Mathemagician. The Math Apprentice is very wise and good at giving math problems to people who usually ask him for advice.  Unfortunately, Math Apprentice is so good at math because he does not know his 3 times tables. (When once asked for the answer to  3X3 he answered "27".)  When a child named Add was born the first thing he said was, "What it 2+2?"   His mom was so shocked she sent him to the Mathemagician. Mathemagician saw this boy's talent for making very challenging math problems and so Add was made the  Math Apprentice.

Math Apprentice enters the chapter "Short Shrift" with a message for Milo from Mathemagician.  "He wants you to solve a math problem that might free Rhyme and Reason," says Math Apprentice.   Milo and Tock begin their journey to Digitopolis to solve the mysterious problem that will free Rhyme and Reason.

Housekeeper & Question Mark by Daniel

Meet The Housekeeper and Question Mark.  The Housekeeper is a man who travels all over to every city to save houses that are about to be demolished. While he has the houses he keeps them clean, thus earning the name the Housekeeper.
The Housekeeper does not join Milo on his second trip, but the Housekeeper's friend, Question Mark, does.  He always ends up having a question mark at the end of everything he says.
"Do you like hamburgers?" asks Milo.
"Yes, do you?" answers Question Mark.  Milo met Question Mark when he was arguing with the older boys of Dictionopolis.  Milo came to Question Mark's aid and it was the beginning of their friendship (although Milo was sometimes annoyed by Mark's never ending questions.).

    The Blob    by Amy

My character is The Blob.  He lives in Digitopolis and he comes into the story when Milo,The Humbug, and Tock are traveling to Dictionopolis.   Milo, The Humbug, and Tock are preparing to go to Dictionopolis but first they stop to look at some words.  The Blob is also walking around which is when Milo and The Blob bump into each other
    "I'm sorry," says Milo.
"Me too," says the Blob.  They both say its O.K. and walk away.  As Milo walks away The Blob over hears him say that he is going to Digitopolis.  The Blob wants to go with them but is too shy to ask, so he goes to a word seller nearby and says aloud, "Well, I had better be on my way to Digitopolis or I'll never get there in time for my cousin's birthday."
"Excuse me.  I coudn't help overhearing, but we are going  to Digtopolis, and we do have one more spot in our car," says Milo.
"I'd be glad to come with you," interrupts the Blob and one second later he is in the car.  They all get into the car, get acquainted and are on their way.
