Love him or hate him, Marilyn Manson was indisputably among the most famous and controversial entertainers of the 1990s. Manson is the latest in a long line of shock rockers, rising to the top of the charts on a platform of sex, drugs and Satanism. Marilyn Manson was one of the artists scheduled to perform at Ozzfest and it was heading to town.
Sterling fears Manson so he decided to take the opportunity to sit this one out, ha ha. I've always been intrigued by his crusade for free speech in music and wondered what this rocker would be like to meet in person. So I was on the mission to meet Marilyn Manson and would be doing it solo.
I arrived at his hotel and saw a familiar face from the likes of fellow autograph collector, Mark. Mark and another Manson fan informed me that Manson hadn't come out yet, but his band had. I saw some of them at various points during my time there but never bothered them for an autograph, fearing I would get kicked away from the hotel prematurely. After only being there ten minutes, guess who came out? Yes you guessed it, Maryilyn Manson! In front of Manson was a very strong looking personal security guard, but we hoped Manson would be approachable, crosses fingers.
It was such a sight seeing this recognizable entertainer walk so casually out of the hotel entrance. With his different colored eyes, pale complexion, and dressing all in black, Manson truly stood out of the crowd. When he turned the corner all of us asked nicely for an autograph, but Manson just kept walking. I was beginning to wonder if he had a hearing problem (ha ha) until he finally responded to one of Marks comments.
Mark said, "Brian can I please just get a picture with you?" Manson was in the midst of heading into the tour bus and turned around and snapped "Brian doesn't..." and he kept muttering all the way into the bus. We didn't know what he just said, but hoped he was saying he would be back down. He didn't sound too happy, so hopefully he wasn't wishing ill will to us.
Minutes later we pretty much got the hint that he wasn't going to be coming down to sign for us, or take a picture. We stood there in disbelief and then his bodyguard stepped back down off the bus. We asked him if Manson ever signs and he said, "not often, but never for people who call him Brian"! Mark was really upset and kept apologizing to us. We didn't think it mattered much because Manson was definitely ignoring us before Mark's comment. All of us stuck by the tour bus until it left, leaving us empty handed.
