Celebrity Encounter Story told by Sterling and Earl:

Grammy Award-winning stand-up comic Lewis Black has truly become one of the most hilarious comics today because of his unique comedy style which often simulates a mental breakdown or rant, usually concerning the absurdities of life and contemporary politics. His trademark angry finger-shaking and shouting bring emphasis to his topics of discussion.

"The Daily Show" introduced Lewis Black to the masses through the cable giant Comedy Central. We quickly became fans after following his weekly "Back in Black" segments on the show. It wasn't long before he began to popup on other television shows and films. Lewis Black is truly a one of a kind comic and it was a no-brainer that we would attempt to meet Mr. Black when we discovered that he was passing through our city.

We wanted to attend the show, but there were some schedule conflicts with our jobs... So that meant we could only hope to meet him after the show. Sterling and Earl arrived at the venue shortly before it let out and began to wait near the backstage exit. Both of us dressed a little warmer for the occasion knowing it would be a pretty frosty night.

It wasn't long before a few more fans decided to join us on this grand autograph adventure. And by adventure, we mean standing in the cold and waiting... very exciting stuff indeed! We always enjoy having a few more fans with us so when the celebrity does come out we have that extra little autograph support. If the crowd grows too large, however, then it can get too overwhelming for the celebrity and they make a quick retreat. With just two or more fans waiting to meet Lewis Black, it was just the right amount of fans for this venue.

About twenty minutes passed and Sterling got the feeling that Lewis Black may have given us the slip and exited from a different part of the building. There were no guards outside and nobody told us to wait across the street (as they sometimes do at this particular venue), which really concerned us. Did they not care about us being there because there was no one inside to guard? We sure hoped this night didn't end in disappointment.

We had been waiting close to an hour when the back doors finally opened and none other than Lewis Black, with a few others, stepped out into the cold night air. When asked for an autograph, Mr. Black didn't even hesitate to put pen to paper. He was very accommodating and we even got to exchange a few words with the comedian, very cool.

As he began to pose for a photograph with Sterling, we discovered that Sterling's battery in his camera was dead! Lewis Black quipped, "No expense with the camera, huh." After a quick laugh Earl brought out his camera and snapped the shot. When he was done signing and posing for pictures we all thanked Mr. Black and shook his hand. What was surprising was that he didn't have a car waiting for him. He began to walk down the street with a few other people. Perhaps he was staying at a hotel near the venue or enjoys a brisk 10 mile walk to the aiport, the world may never know. We were just very pleased and honored to have met such an awesome comedic talent.

Final Thoughts

After a long wait for this stand up comic, we were very pleased to walk away with an autograph and a photograph with Mr. Lewis Black. This angry little comic doesn't go berserk if you ask him for an autograph, instead he shows nothing but gratitude and appreciation to his fans. Thank you so very much Mr. Black for a wonderful experience. Keep the jokes coming and we wish you continued success.
