After having been successful with Tom Brokaw and Sam Donaldson, Sterling and Earl thought adding Peter Jennings to the mix would go great with our news anchor collection. Jennings was in town in part of a national news tour he was doing for the nightly news. The bad part about it was that the thing he was doing was not open to the public. This is one party that we decided we'd crash and headed down there.
We arrived at the news station and sat in the parking lot and waited. We noticed that there was a nice luxury car parked behind us, so we figured we were in the right place. After about an hour had passed a man came out to investigate our intentions at the news station. We told him that we were there to get Peter Jennings autograph. He informed us that Peter hadn't arrived yet and would come later in the evening and if we wanted his autograph to go downtown because he was filming down there.
Earl was instantly skeptical of this strange man, but he seemed like an honest man and Sterling wanted to go, so we took off to go downtown. As Earl was driving he called the Newt (fellow autograph collector) who was already downtown trying to get Snoop Dogg's autograph. Earl asked him if anything was happening down there and Newt looked but couldn't see anything. This was a little too strange and it seemed like the man threw us a bone, so Earl headed back to the station.
It was beginning to rain and it was definitely not the weather to get autographs in. We drove up to the parking lot just in time to see Peter Jennings walk out of the station and jump inside the luxury car. The man had fooled both of us and we were so mad. It was raining so hard that we couldn't get out and run up to the car, but hoped we would be successful when he came back. But time was not on our side, because Peter didn't come back until 5:30pm and we were already kicked out of the parking lot by then.
The reason we had to leave was because the governor of our state would be visiting the news station so the parking lot had to be cleared. We could only watch as Peter pulled up at 5:30pm and we were too far away to do anything about it. There was no hope of him coming over because protestors were beginning to wait along with us to shout out there concerns to our governor. Defeated and tricked, Sterling and Earl went home empty handed.
