It was such exciting news when we learned that another movie would be filming in our town and it was none other than John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars". Earl finally managed to get information to where the movie was filming, but didn't know the dates of when they were shooting. After a couple of failed efforts to find them we were giving up hope on finding the set. After these failed attempts Sterling had completely given up hope and wasn't planning on going with Earl on this last attempt.
Earl finally talked Sterling into going and we headed off in hopes that the third try would a charm. As we approached the location we were shocked to spot trailers and all of the other signs of a working movie set. We had finally found it, but there still was much more work to be done. These film sets aren't advertised because they don't want crowds showing up, so we were afraid they wouldn't allow us to hang out for autographs. Our nerves were killing us and for awhile we couldn't leave the car because of it.
Finally we built up some adrenaline and decided to just walk right in and hopefully nobody would mind (a little Matt Damon deja vu). This is probably the most nerve-racking time we have ever experienced and we didn't know quite where to stand and wait. We decided to wait close to the trailers, but far enough so that it remained respectful.
They were filming inside the building and it didn't seem to bother anyone walking by that we were standing there. From their perspective we could be the producer's children for all they know, so that could be a factor in the reason they didn't mind our presence. We eventually settled in and became a lot more confidant of the situation and now could focus on getting autographs. After quite some time passed a lady decided to finally walk up to us and asked who we were waiting for. Sterling was honest (which could have been a bad thing) and told her that we were there to meet the stars. The lady revealed that she was the assistant to Director John Carpenter.
It didn't seem to bug her at all that we were there to get autographs and the next thing she did surprised us. She took us to her car and opened the trunk; hopefully she wasn't about to get rid of the pesky autograph collectors if you know what I mean. Instead she... oh wait I'm sorry I'll leave that one for John Carpenter's section. After saying goodbye to the lady we felt very comfortable on the set and felt we were given the okay to stand there and get autographs. Throughout the day we kept seeing some of the stars of the film, but they were busy rehearsing for the coming scenes and we respected their space during those moments.
After they had finished shooting for the day it was now or never for us to ask for autographs. Earl noticed Natasha Henstridge lighting up a cigarette and he took a breath and asked her for an autograph. She said "Oh my god, it's three o'clock in the morning" jokingly. She showed us her beautiful smile and said, "Sure what do you have?" (This whole autograph hunt was during a night shoot). Natasha is the coolest person we've ever come across to this date and only Billy Bob Thornton competes for the top spot of best signer we have met.
At one point she wanted to see what other pictures we had of the rest of the cast to get signed. When she saw Ice Cube's picture she informed us that he wasn't there that day, but she was happy to see the other pictures. She stopped Clea Duvall and Jason Statham and told them we had a picture of them to get signed. It's funny because we didn't even have to ask Clea or Jason, Natasha did it for us (now that's a cool celebrity). Clea Duvall couldn't believe we had a picture of her, but agreed to sign. Jason Statham was also an awesome guy to meet and was very friendly.
There was so much happening that we didn't know who to talk to... it was just madness. Natasha stuck around and watched as Clea and Jason signed/posed for pictures with each of us. Jason and Clea seemed to be finished and wished us a good night and we thanked them as they headed off. Natasha on the other hand hung out with us a bit longer.
The aftermath of all the mayhem that had just taken place had left Sterling and Earl in a trance like state. We eventually realized that Sterling didn't get a picture with Jason Statham and Earl didn't get an autograph from Jason. This realization freaked us out and we quickly tried to find them among the trailers, but a lady from the set stopped us. She told us that we had to go because they were running late for a flight. Earl begged the lady for a chance to see Jason again and she finally agreed and started to walk off to see what she could do. As the lady was about to turn around, Jason came out of his trailer and went right up to us.
"Hey guys, I have something for both of you". It's funny because we were trying to get to him and he came out to find us. He ripped out the front cover of the script(s) he had for "Ghosts of Mars" and signed them for each of us. It was incredible that he came looking for us to give us these. He said he thought we'd enjoy them and he sure wasn't mistaken. Then he posed for a picture with Sterling and signed Earl's picture and was off. We shook his hand and thanked him for coming over again, what a great guy. This was truly an amazing night and it's our personal favorite autograph experience.
