Celebrity Encounter Story told by Sterling and Earl:

A celebrity golf tournament was being held in our hometown and it seemed like the perfect chance to add some great autographs to our collection. Luc Longley, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Al Unser Jr, along with many other NBA and NFL stars were scheduled to attend. As we were trying to find where the event was located, we heard on the radio that a member of Smash Mouth was there as well. The radio host was hoping to get an interview with him and now we were hoping just to get a chance to meet him. We wished that it was vocalist Steve Harwell, but we didn't keep our hopes up too high because we figured we just heard things wrong.

We finally found the golf course and immediately started scouting the place for celebrities. By asking a few people around the golf course we found out that there was somebody from Smash Mouth and it was none other than what we had hoped, lead singer Steve Harwell. Both of us were kind of mad that we hadn't heard this earlier because we had some great things of Smash Mouth to get signed at home, oh well. Now we knew who it was and it was merely a matter of finding out where he was on the golf course, which could be difficult.

We waited around for a few hours and got some good sports autographs, but didn't see any signs of Steve Harwell. Both of us headed back to the main building at the entrance, after scouting the golf course, and figured that everyone would have to meet up there eventually. Finally, we spotted Mr. Smash Mouth himself driving up in a golf cart. He was coming to the main entrance because all that golfing had made him thirsty and he wanted some water. I guess if you want autographs it is best to stake out the water holes, ha ha.

We couldn't believe that we were actually seeing Steve Harwell in person. We were hesitant at first, but when we asked for an autograph he didn't mind at all. Steve was very friendly and even posed for a photo-op with each of us. Each of us asked him about the current record and Steve told us some very interesting stuff about the progress of the album. He actually just flew in for this event while recording the next record, which was cool. Both of us thanked him and just like that he took off down the road to play some more.

We had previously tried meeting this band twice, once when they were at our annual rockfest and another time when they were opening up for Lenny Kravitz, but never had any luck. It was surprising they didn't sign at rock fest because most bands come to the autograph booth, but unfortunately Smash Mouth cancelled their signing session. We figured they were bad signers or something, but Steve really came through for us on this day. Later on in the day Steve actually sat down not far from us and ate some food, which was cool.

Then there was yet another Steve sighting even later on in the day. When we were waiting by a nearby hotel, guess who showed up? You guessed it Steve! He saw us in the hot sun and asked Earl if he wanted some water and he replied yes, so Steve grabbed his bottled water and threw it to Earl. How cool is that? Steve was just one of the many celebrities on this day that made this day so memorable.

Final Thoughts

This was a very fun day and the surprise of seeing Steve there was just priceless. He ended up being a very nice guy and showed he actually cared about us when he threw us a bottled water, cool guy. Thank YOU for everything Steve!!
