Bo Derek Autograph

Date: November 10, 2001

Celebrity Encounter Story told by Earl:

This blond, pale-eyed sex symbol shot to stardom (and made cornrows fashionable) in the title role of Blake Edwards' 10 (1979). Ever since, Derek has been able to find herself a spot among Hollywood icons and it just so happened that she would be coming our way, yeah! Sterling had last minute plans, but I was still determined to get her autograph. This wasn't supposed to be a hard autograph hunt because it was at an art fair that comes around once a year where the celebrity usually sits down and signs autographs. Unfortunately for me, this was going to be much more complicated than I had predicted.

I arrived at the fair and scoped out the place looking for her booth. I found her booth but when asked if she would be signing the organizers said she wasn't going to be meeting with fans. They did however tell me that she would be showing up at the art fair and would be walking around to admire others work.

They informed me that it might be difficult to spot her, but that my best bet would be to walk around and look for a crowd of people. I believed what they were telling me, but figured she would stop by her own booth eventually. Instead of going on a wild goose chase, I chose to stay by the booth and hope that my risk would pay off.

My prediction was correct as thirty minutes later Bo Derek showed up surrounded by some huge bodyguards. I figured she had to come my way because one lady that I talked to briefly was going to buy one of Bo's expensive pictures, but would only do so if Bo Derek signed it. So the people at the Bo Derek booth got a note to Derek's security to come by the booth in order for Bo Derek to sign the lady's picture.

I couldn't believe my good fortune because about 15 minutes later Bo Derek eventually showed up and as they were getting the picture out of its package, I was panicking trying to get a good spot to ask for an autograph myself. I managed to get a fantastic spot and watched as Bo autographed the lady's picture. As she was giving the sharpie back to her security, I asked her politely for an autograph. She was kind enough to sign my picture and I couldn't have been happier. I thanked her and before anyone else could ask for an autograph, she gave back the Sharpie and headed off. I didn't even have time to ask for a picture with her, but I was glad to at least have an autograph.

Bo Derek refused to sign any more autographs that day and I followed her entourage around the festival (along with many other fans) and she turned down autograph request after autograph request. At one point I had a one on one with her and asked her for a photo-op and she told me that she wasn't allowed to and moved on. This was just an excuse however because I was told everything was up to her discretion. I was really happy to have her autograph and headed off.

Final Thoughts

A bit of a surprise of how difficult her autograph was to get, but I'm so happy that I can add her autograph to my collection. I lucked out again. Thank you Bo!
