Celebrity Encounter Story told by Earl:

Originally dismissed as little more than a pretty boy, Tony Curtis overcame a series of bad reviews and undistinguished pictures to emerge as one of the most successful actors of his era, appearing in a number of the most popular and acclaimed films of the late '50s and early '60s. This legends career was during a period of time when we weren't even born yet, but that didn't mean we weren't fans. Both of us are avid movie buffs, it's the career we're trying to get into, so of course we were familiar with his body of work. Mr. Curtis was in town to display some of his paintings and this was a perfect opportunity to try for an autograph.

Unfortunately it was a very expensive event and we didn't have the dough, so we thought we would try and get his autograph going into the event. We arrived there very early and kept our eyes open for limousines or other types of luxury vehicles. He wasn't going to be there until the evening (sometime between 6:30-10pm) but we fortunately got there in the early afternoon. It was fortunate because it set up a grand opportunity for us. The event built itself around us and as a result we were now inside this very lavish event for free. I guess it really does pay (a couple hundred bucks) to get there early!

Later that evening we found out where Tony Curtis was scheduled to be and went inside the building to investigate. We walked around the event waiting for his appearance and tried to fit in the best we could. They had such a lavish set up and offered all kinds of free goodies to the guests. Tony Curtis finally arrived and sat down at his art booth ready to meet the public. We weren't positive that he would be signing so this was great news to us.

It was finally our turn to meet him and he turned out to be such a gentleman. He was nice and posed for two pictures with Earl and one with Sterling. He also signed both of our pictures with our sharpies as opposed to the pen he was using. When he asked Earl why he wanted it to be signed in a blue sharpie Earl told him it was his favorite color. So Tony inscribed it "Earl, Blue is True, Tony Curtis". Very cool inscription and we thanked him before heading back over to the snack table.

Final Thoughts

A very long wait for an autograph but well worth it since it was for Tony Curtis. It's amazing that we got to enjoy the benefits of this event for free, the early bird truly gets the worm. Thank you Mr. Curtis!
