During the 1980s, Cosby was among the highest paid entertainers in the United States and also one of the most famous. Cosby remains a legend of popular culture and still travels the comedy circuit bringing laughter to fans all over. It was our turn to laugh as Cosby was coming to town for a show and this was a great opportunity to see his stand up, as well as possibly meeting the man.
We arrived and basically went straight to watch the show. He was pretty funny and we had a great evening. Earl was going to ask during his "ask audience" segment of the show for an autograph, but he was beaten to the punch when someone else asked first. Mr. Cosby told the young girl that it wouldn't be fair to everyone else in the audience if he signed just for her, so Earl was glad that he didn't embarrass himself to ask.
After the concert we ran down to see if we could catch him exiting the venue. There was some security/police and commotion in the front of the building, which distracted us from our original intention of going to the side door of the venue. We began to get the crazy idea that maybe Bill Cosby was going to exit in this area. This is understandable because we were still newbies at autograph collecting and as a result weren't quite certain where he would be exiting.
As we were standing there, deciding what to do, a Jeep pulled over and the driver asked the police officer for a light. Once the cigar was lit the Jeep took off down the street, which didn't seem important at the moment. The officer walked back saying, "wow that was Bill Cosby in that Jeep"! We couldn't believe it and quickly ran to the sidewalk and saw it head in the direction of the airport, crap. We missed the perfect opportunity and I guess we'll never know if he would've agreed to sign.
Our year hasn't been as autograph productive as one would hope. Bill Cosby's name popped up into our calendar and we knew that we just had to give him another shot. It was just a few years prior that we tried and failed at obtaining Mr. Cosby's signature. With much more experience came great responsibility this go around. Mr. Cosby was scheduled to do some stand-up at a venue that just so happens to be an autograph favorite hotspot and nightmare, so it was really up in the air.
Both of us arrived just about half way through his gig and found a luxury car waiting near the rear entrance of the building. We decided to just kick back and relax until the show was over. Both of us had long discussions on life and how the world goes round and round, trying to find out the meaning of it all... or perhaps it was more about Jell-O pudding... the world may never know... (evil laugh)
All of the sudden Earl spotted the comic legend himself coming from the backdoors of the venue. This was surprising because the audience in attendance hadn't even exited the building yet, which would warn us that the show was over. As our previous experience with him proves, he leaves the stage and heads directly to his awaiting vehicle. So be warned if you are trying to meet Bill Cosby a.k.a "The Flash". All of this didn't matter at this moment because Bill freaking Cosby was now only steps away from us.
Earl having almost passed out from the moment the doors flew open snapped out of it and built up enough strength to ask Mr. Cosby for an autograph, while Sterling was still frozen in carbonite. Mr. Cosby replied, "Sure, sure, hurry up, hurry up..." Then Earl fumbled around for his Sharpie and we soon couldn't believe that Bill Cosby was actually signing for us. He was in such a hurry that it seemed like a ship was sinking and we were jumping into the last remaining lifeboat as the water hit our feet. Cosby wasn't rude during his mad rush from the venue, but sort of fast-forwarded our great encounter with him instead.
Since Earl asked for the signature, Sterling built up enough courage and quickly asked if we could get a photo with him as well. Now this ship was still going down fast because he continued to reply along the lines of, "Sure, sure, hurry up, hurry up..." But that still didn't stop him from taking a few more seconds to grant two lucky fans another request. After our very quick run in with this Comic Legend he was off into the darkness of the night. It only took us about thirty minutes altogether to meet Mr. Cosby, which only added icing to the cake. After the ink had settled, we decided to stop and grab a slice of pizza to celebrate this joyous occasion.
