Margaret Cho Autograph

Celebrity Encounter Story told by Earl:

Margaret Cho's success as one of the country's premier comedians has been groundbreaking. She first achieved fame by appearing in her own sitcom "All American Girl", which featured television's first Asian American family. In 1999, Cho's smash-hit one-woman show I'm The One That I Want played off Broadway, toured the country and became a best selling book and a feature film that grossed more per print than any film in history ($1.4 million with only nine prints). This fantastic comedian seems to be unstoppable and her career continues to soar. Cho was coming to town and wasn't performing at just any ordinary venue, but it just so happened that it was at my college. This was great news and I would be going solo because Sterling came down with the flu.

I wasn't able to get to the venue as early as I had hoped and figured that she had already arrived. Her performance began and I was now positive that she beat me to the venue. Oh well, I'm used to waiting so I just hung around and hoped that it would be worth it. I waited right outside the stage door and passed the time catching up on some schoolwork.

The show had been going on for a while when a limousine pulled up and parked next to the backstage doors exiting ramp. Seeing this perked me up and I prepared for anything. The show didn't seem over because I hadn't seen the crowd exiting yet, so I figured there was still a little bit of a wait left for me.

About 20 minutes later the crowd finally started exiting the building and it meant Margaret Cho could be leaving soon as well.A funny thing started to occur as the crowd was leaving. Since I was standing next to the back door with a notebook, I guess I appeared to be security or something like that to the crowd. I know this because I found out that I was intimidating some fans from waiting next to the limo.

I got a kick out of this, but it finally came to an end when a woman finally asked if they could hang around- funny stuff. Since they stuck around others began to wait as well and before I knew it there was a pretty huge crowd outside waiting for Cho's exit. A couple people had actually made signs welcoming her and thanking her for coming to town. Everyone was still on the lower level, so at least I would be the first one to ask for an autograph if she came out and didn't want to sign for a huge crowd.

A stagehand walked out of the backstage doors and was taken back by the enormous crowd. He immediately turned around and quickly went back inside. A few minutes later he came back out with a lady and it looked like they had something important to say. I figured that Cho was about to come out and they were going make us all leave. Instead the lady informed the crowd that we were at the wrong door and Ms. Cho was going to be signing on the East Side of the building. I've heard these types of decoy ploys before so I wasn't certain if I should trust the lady. There was one thing that was certain; Margaret Cho would be leaving in that limousine so I kept to my plan.

I figured that if the signing was a hoax that the big crowd would come back or I would see them leaving. Some time passed and nobody was coming back so this peaked my interest. I took the chance of falling for the securities trick and decided I would take my chances at the door on the East Side of the building. I got there and didn't see anybody, which started to make me suspicious.

I spotted a side door and opened it to find the crowd waiting in a small room. Once inside I realized that this was a backstage pass event because most of the people there were wearing them. I couldn't believe that they were allowing non-backstage pass holders to attend the meet and greet. The meet and greet worked by sending groups of about 5 into another small room where they could mingle with Cho herself, I still couldn't believe it.

My turn had finally come and I went, along with 3 others, in the very last group. As we entered it was none other than Margaret Cho who greeted us. We talked with her for a little bit and she seemed like a really nice person. After the pleasantries Margaret sat down at a table and signed all of our things. If that wasn't enough she then stood up with each one of us and took posed for pictures (with those who had cameras). Margaret looked tired from her performance but that didn't stop her from signing and being friendly. I thanked her for everything and all of us left the room with smiles on our faces.

Final Thoughts

Very cool, this was my second time being backstage and this time the celebrity actually signed autographs (The Goo Goo Dolls could learn something from Cho). It's sad that during my experiences collecting autographs that it has made it hard for me to trust security/organizers, but I'm glad I eventually took the woman's advice. Cool autograph to add to my collection! Thanks Margaret!
