Tom Brokaw has been NBC's Nightly News anchor and Managing Editor since 1983, and is one of the most recognizable names in broadcast journalism. His background as a hard-nosed reporter has helped earn most of the major broadcasting awards, which were all well deserved. Tom Brokaw just so happens to be our favorite journalist and we were so happy to hear that he was coming to town to sign copies of "The Greatest Generation". This particular event was held on my birthday and what a birthday present this was hopefully going to be.
Sterling and I showed up early with our copies of the book and were surprised to see the huge line that had already formed. It was good that we got there so early because this line just kept growing and growing, until it eventually sprawled out of the building and down the sidewalk. The wait seemed even longer because both of us had celebrated my birthday, along with other friends, into the wee morning. To say the least we were exhausted and the wait was killing us.
Thankfully Tom Brokaw finally ended the misery of the wait and first spoke briefly to the crowd before signing. Since there was such a huge line he didn't speak very long at all and quickly sat down to take care of business. The line was moving at warp speed and each fan was treated like a cow in a slaughterhouse. The staff took each fan's book and laid it in front of Brokaw to sign. It was so rushed that it was hard to even speak to Mr. Brokaw, but we did ask if he would also sign an index card as well.
Brokaw without any hesitation signed the index cards, which was sure nice of him to do. We weren't able to take a picture with him because he was in such a hurry, but my Mom was there and took pictures of us meeting him -which was cool. It was so great to add his autograph to the collection and we headed home to catch up on sleep.
