Delegate’s Comments

The holiday season is upon us again and another shooting year has gone by. I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and are ready for Christmas.  Jackie and I put lots of miles on the motorhome and Jeep again traveling to shoots in NC and other Southern Zone states including the Southern Zone telephonic shoot in Winchester.  We also enjoyed three Satellite Grands and another trip to the new ATA Homegrounds in Sparta, IL for the Grand American.

Building update!  The Homegrounds clubhouse construction project is really moving along and it looks like it will be a great facility. The metal building is going to be 40 by 100 feet with a 14 by 100 foot porch along the front. The building is being located west of the flagpoles on the flat area generally behind trap fields 6 and 7.  The current gravel road has been moved to go behind the building and then on to field 9.  Earth moving and grading have been completed and the supplier has delivered the building.  By the time you read this, the concrete slab will have been poured. A significant amount of money is still needed to help complete the inside rooms and provide furnishings.  If you have been waiting for some positive action before sending your tax-deductible deduction to the NCTHOF building fund, now is the time.

Congratulations to the State Team Members, the High Average Leaders and everyone that competed and achieved a personal goal. Also congratulations to Bill Howe who, once again, shot the most registered targets during the target year.  Bill exceeded his previous record and shot 27,800 registered targets in 2007. In addition, congratulations are in order for Jim Wilson who became the 18th NC shooter to get an AA27AA pin. This year there was a slight decrease in the number of shooters who shot 10,000 or more registered targets.  Twenty-one NC shooters became members of this year’s “10,000 Club”.  Shooter score statistics included in this newsletter are also on the NCTA web-site www.nctrap.com.

Chuck and Sandie Patterson have been doing an excellent job managing the State Team points system for the last few years and have volunteered to do it again this year.  I really appreciate their dedication to this task.  Please thank Chuck and Sandie when you see them.

I would like to thank Doug McKinney for continuing to lead the SCTP program as the NC State Director.  We all need to support this program as much as we can.  The youth shooters introduced through this program are the ones that will help carry on our trapshooting traditions.    If you can donate money, guns, ammo and/or time, please contact Doug.  NC SCTP teams again enjoyed competing at this year’s Grand American with the guidance and help of Doug, Kim and the SCTP volunteer coaches.  As you may know, the Durham County Wildlife Club will host an NRA/ATA Trap Coach School on January 19 and 20, 2008.  Doug and Kim McKinney have been working with ATA Youth Programs Director Edie Reynolds to set this up.  They would like to see at least one person from each NC club attend the school. Please contact Doug, Kim, Edie or me for further information.

I would like to thank and congratulate all the North Carolina gun club managers and shooters for another good year. In state, we threw 736,775 targets, which was less than the previous year principally due to not having a Southern Zone site at Bostic in 2007. Bostic will be a Zone telephonic site in 2008 and that should help us get back on track.

I would also like to recognize the NCTA and HOF BOD members for their leadership and hard work. They have planned at least 4 major shoots at the NC Homegrounds for 2008.  Greg High is doing an outstanding job as NCTA President as is Bob Keever as the NCTHOF president. Thanks also to all the volunteers that help make the Homegrounds shoots successful.

Please remember that donations to the North Carolina Trapshooters Hall of Fame, Inc. are tax deductible. If you are looking for another charity for a tax deduction this year, the NCTHOF will certainly put your money to good use.  Donations can be sent to: NCTHOF, %Ken Duncan, 540 Junie Beauchamp Rd, Advance, NC 27006. The NCTHOF BOD will certainly appreciate your personal contributions, as well as, any fund raising ideas or suggestions you may have.

Don’t forget to check out www.tarheeltrap.com from time to time. Freddy Redmon, who maintains the TarHeel web site, does a great job with shoot dates, winner’s lists, information, pictures and the trap shooting chat room.

In closing, Jackie and I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy New Year. We hope 2008 will be a great year for everyone.  It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your ATA Delegate this year. Please contact me if you have questions or need assistance.
