Two years after the 1957 debut of Reading the Landscape: An Adventure in Ecology (later published in a revised and expanded edition as Reading the Landscape of America), the book for which she is best known, the American naturalist May Theilgaard Watts traveled to Europe for the first time in her life; she returned again a few years later. These two trips resulted in Reading the Landscape of Europe, published in 1971. (Published in Great Britain as The Countryside Around You.)
In Reading the Landscape of Europe, May Theilgaard Watts brings her broad knowledge of botany, ecology, culture and literature, along with her lively imagination and discerning eye to bear on the geography, gardens, bogs, trees, towns and rooflines of France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Britain. Watts considered the writing and illustrations in Reading the Landscape of Europe to be among the best work of her life.
